  1. thank you very much for your suggestions. as i'm new here i'm still figuring out how to properly use this forum and am not sure how to reply to each response individually. to answer bab's question, yes. the mason stains are mixed in with the slip. the reason why i'm trying to cover the entire piece in slip is because it's meant to be held and viewed in the round and leaving the bottom unfinished feel very unfinished to me. i'm working at a small studio and have no experience firing myself hence the firing questions. thanks again for your time and help. i really appreciate it.
  2. hi, can mason stains in slip be applied after bisque firing or only to greenware? we fire at cone 6 in an electric kiln. thanks!
  3. i'm trying to fire a baking potato shaped piece that i want to cover in slip and mason stains. it doesn't roll. my question is can i apply my slip and stain to the bottom or will it fuse to the kiln shelf? we fire to cone 6 in an electric kiln. i've seen little tripods for this purpose but was told i can't fire these to higher temps. any suggestions? thanks!
  4. hi, i've read of some artists applying slip to bisque fired work and then refiring . is this possible? i'm currently applying it only on greenware but would like to be able to apply it again after bisque firing. i'm aiming for texture and use a porcelain slip on an unmatched clay body. if there is some lack of adhesion it actually suits my purpose. i'm now adding oxides and stains to my porcelain slips and applying to leatherhard greenware. i'd like to be able to touch up areas after it's bisque fired. i finish it off by staining the piece and firing it to cone 6 on an electric kiln.

  7. thanks so much for your response. it's really helpful. i feel less concerned now. so when you say nothing happened when you fired the aluminum oxide that should mean it's perfect for my purpose which is to provide surface texture. i've not tried fluxing anything yet. do you have a basic formula for fluxing such aggregates with a frit? i'm not aiming for melting but if it happens it's fine. from your results the garnet is a no go unfortunately. exploding is what i'm afraid of. btw , i see we're neighbors. how nice. thanks again.

Hi, i'm new here and starting to do test tiles in which i add different aggregate materials to my clay. i'm not the most scientific potter but i am doing research and keeping notes. i'm working at a studio that's not my own. we use a small electric kiln, cone 4-6 . i have chosen all hard materials that are non combustible. i'm wondering if anyone has experience with adding any of the following? my main concerns are any offgassing or sputtering/molten stuff that might damage the kiln or others' work. this is my list of test materials so far: feldspar, fine basalt, aluminum oxide
