  1. Looking for objects to use as large saggars

  2. Has anyone tried using a ceramic fibre kiln for soda firing by coating the fibre with a high-zirconia coating to protect it from erosion. The coating would still erode, but it might do so sufficiently slowly to prtoct the fibre, though it would need to be reapplied from time to time. Any comments, especially any actual experience?

Hi and welcome to the forum. This is the Status Updates section, it is more for general things people have going on rather than specific questions. It's hard to search this section so it's better to post your question in one of sections of the forum, for this question Equipment Use would be a good place. Just click on the link and follow the prompts to post.

  3. I started throwing last November.  I am having a lot of difficulty throwing narrow neck bud vases.  Is this just a matter of more practice time or am I missing out on technique.   I have had success at many different forms.  I use Kansas Clay, Buff Plus (grog body).   Is this the problem.  I've spent hours watching You Tube for instruction.  Any thoughts on this word be appreciated.

Hi Joe and welcome to the forum!

This is the status updates section, it's just for general comments about what people have going on and is difficult to search when the post gets moved down the list. A much better place to post your question is in one of the main sections, Studio Operations and Making Work would be a good place for it. Just click the link in the last section then the orange button that says "Start new  topic" and follow the prompts.

  4. hey there potters! After a long rainy summer here in Maine I'm so happy to be back in my studio! Hope you all are well! Here is my questions du jour: I mostly work in Cone 10 B-mix, but also have done a lot of indigenous pit firing with earthen ware....I have a bag of mica and I'm thinking about wedging it into my B-mix 10....anyone have thoughts about how it works in high fire situations?

Hi Carol, you would likely get more responses if you posted your question in either the Studio Operations or Chemistry section. This status updates section isn't searchable and it gets hard to find posts after old ones get bumped down the list. Re your question, are you looking for the sparkle qualities of mica? If so I've found the sparkles are burned out by cone 6 (and probably lower than that).

Part of me wants to put another bowl out. I would like my faith in human decency restored, and yet I need to be realistic.

  10. We closed today!

We have keys and remotes; tomorrow we'll start moving things from storage.

The garage space has one big "two car" door and a one car door.
The one car space will become ...Studio!
My plans include putting up a wall to close off the one car space, with a person door near the back - door with a big window in it, to catch some of the light from that North facing window.
We'll run wiring in the new wall, separate the overhead lighting from the rest of the garage, and add several flat mount LED lights up there.
The heat pump thing will go on that far wall somewhere, the kiln in the corner by the rollup door.

It's a nice space. The window isn't as big as the prior Studio's, but it will bring it a lot of light, being Westerly.
The space is a bit bigger.

The roll about shelving we negotiated for from the sellers.
I'll very likely use a few of them on the Studio side; they are adjustable and very stout.

  15. Hello, In other forums I am in you must introduce yourself before asking or participating. This is my Intro....I have become obsessed with sculpture and "bowls" - handmade and slab building with glazing usually. I am untrained but have fearless - not interested in perfection....lean toward the Japanese term - Shouganai (it can't   be helped, move forward or "nothing lasts").  I think forums are a great help in learning and will ask my starting question shortly ;-) Locosan/Jerry

  18. Hi, I guess I'm a newbie, lol. I enjoy all forms of art but recently have been mesmerized by clay and all the wonderful things you can make with it. My journey is just beginning so there is so much for me to learn and experience when it comes to clay.

  19. I am interested in learning more about firing tile that are rolled out on a slab roller, with a raised  texture applied, and ready to be bisque fired.

What is the best way to fire my greenware tile without warping or cracking? Then what is the best way to glaze fire the tiles.  The clay is cone 6 and smooth. Standard #182

  20. I am experimenting with Cuerda Seca technique and would like to print multiple tiles with the wax resist design but I am not having a lot of success with the silkscreen. I am using Aftosa wax resist. Has anyone out there ever created a decal with the wax resist?

Hi Leah, it would be better to post your question in Studio Operations and Making Work rather than here in Status Updates. Since this section is hard to search going forward. Just click on the link then the orange tab on the left and follow the prompts. Welcome to the forum :)

  21. Hello guys, I'm back at it.  Does anyone know how I can determine how thick I need to make a bisque fired terra cotta wall to hold the pressure of the liquid contents inside?  Of course I'm not making the huge qvevri that they made in Georgia and had to be buried, still might try for a 30 gallon vessel.  This is assuming my seams and good, walls consistent, my recycled clay was clean etc.  And also, I'll probably end up pit firing because of the whole size of the pot kiln situation.  The shape will be a variation of the classic qvevri, round with high and wide hips, but probably not so exaggerated.  And it will be sealed with beeswax.   As always I appreciate your wisdom, input and encouragement.

I'ld put your post in the Studio Operations and Making Work section, more people will probably see it there than here plus it will be searchable and easier to find.
