  1. Definition question.... What do you think of when clay items are described as ceramics, while other items are described as pottery? How many clay artists prefer one definition over the other when describing their work?
  2. Lady, I think that thingy is a part from a transmission, but I'm not sure. I dry my pieces by sandwiching them between plaster slabs.

Spring is almost here. Thousands of Sandhill Cranes are gathering along the feeding grounds of the Platte River in central Nebraska before continuing on to Canada. I finally did something related to the event.

  7. From the album: experimenting

Always wanted to put raku fired items in my flower beds. Last summer I sealed this raku fired leaf with a gloss clear uv sealer and left it outside. Today the snow melted so I took a picture. Pleased to see that after being out side on the sun, rain, and freezing snow it still has the copper color.

Most green ware was placed on fire brick. Shelf is also on fire brick. The shelf is the same height as the wood port for the fire box.

Squirrel cage fan is directed toward the fire box opening to enhance the flame.
  13. From the album: experiment in woodfire bisque

After loading the Kiln, I warmed the kiln with a small fire before closing the door.
  14. From the album: experiment in woodfire bisque

There were some cracks in a couple of pieces which may or may not be from firing to fast. Occasionally I see some of the same cracks when I roll scraps of clay together.
  15. From the album: experiment in woodfire bisque

Cones 019, 08, and 05 were put in the kiln to indicate firing temperature. 019 is completely melted.
  16. Thanks Wish I could reproduce those raku colors, but then the fun of raku is the unique results from each firing.

  19. I looked at other photos in your gallery and the vase with the incised design (dogs in background)reminds me of a pot I bought in an antique shop years ago. The dealer thought it was from central America. It is a pit fired bowl with 3 legs and a roughly etched design. I bought it because I liked the primitive quality of the piece.
