  1. Staring at a jug for a week, wondering how the hell to glaze it to set off the form just right.

It's been daubed now. Nothing like other people wanting to see your unfinished work to release the creative juices!

  2. That moment when you visit someone's house you haven't been to for a long time and pick up a jug off the shelf to see where it came from and discover it's got your initials on...

You used to be able to send slides off for processing, dunno if you still can. Or get one of those little scanners but I've never found the quality good enough. Slides have such high contrast it doesn't come out well.

  3. Circumstances have kept me away from clay for the last 2 months.I feel my creativity will take a while to return. Fixed by craving with a family holiday in France and found some excellent ceramics in Burgandy, and a nice bowl now sitting on my dining table. Hope to get back to the wheel soon...

  4. I donated some pots to a raffle and there were several murmurs of excitement from friends. One even came up and bought a bowl that was't in the raffle - my first ever actual sale.

My pottery shed has been about 4C most days, now they're forecasting 15-17C, pretty unusual for this time of year. Time to get out there and make more!

  8. Made an army of test tiles. Just to dead soliders in the end?

  9. Happy New Year clay friends and associates!

  10. Got my first commission today. I'm not actively selling at the moment so this is an exciting development.

Thank you. It'll be interesting to focus on someone else's expectation.

  11. Very sad news, I will not be able to take ceramics next semester...it looks like my hobby will be put on hold for quite some time, as we currently do not have the finances to set up the rest of the necessary equipment in our current space.

Sad news for sure. As Min says you have been bitten and you will be back. I was unable to pot for many years and when I came back it didn't take long to remember my skills so I hope you find that too.

I think they're Irish. Maybe I'll just try a batch of bigger pots.

I'm still experimenting with glaze combinations and techniques and giving myself lots of little bowls to do is quite time consuming. I need a glazing elf.

  16. After two hours of practice throwing this morning: I need to post in the "Help, I cannot center," and the "Help, I cannot pull walls, and the " Why in the he** did I buy a wheel anyway" threads.

Keep at it. I find my skill level improves in fits and starts. You hit a plateau and sometimes seem to slide backwards then after a break suddenly something somewhere has switched on to the next level. Take a break for a couple of days, do something different and come back to it.

No they weren't going after potters. This was an attack on core internet infrastructure which put hundreds of sites out of action.

  18. Trying to remember how my kiln program works. Ran a little test up to 150c and all seems to be working, just need something to put on my wooden floor now for a proper test.

I use a sheet of calcium silicate "Masterboard" from the local building suppliers. Gives a degree of heat and fire protection.

Tricky! Iron-rich stoneware, apparently a good thrower.

  21. It is glaze firing day...I seem to forget just how hot it can get in the kiln room when the outside/combustion air is coming in at 95F+. The pots are reducing and apparently so am I :)

Benzine, as long as that doesn't involve flashing.

  22. Second single firing! Not bad, not bad at all - apart from some warpy bowls but hey it's only throwing technique.

Oops! I lost mine years ago after taking it off for pottery. Not sure if my wife has ENTIRELY forgiven me though we're still together 20 years on ;-). In fact it was her idea for me to get back into clay - I'm beginning to wonder why.
