  1. 1.3 2.2 3.1 (all I know is that I really had to make my flue smaller) 4 (2,4) has to be updraft- its on a hill and the fire is at the bottom right?
  2. You know how you southerners blame the Alberta Clipper for cold weather? I grew up during the cold war and we used to blame the cold weather on the Russians! :D

You know, the scientist are saying about 6 southern states are in an unusually cold pattern that has been going on since the 1960's. They call it a "Warming Hole" - go figure...

  3. I'm not so crazy about my little company name & will likely change it. It is sooooo boring. It's Ceramic Fixtures- because I mostly make light fixtures- but that's changing too. That makes this topic interesting- to see what others are doing. I still haven't come up with anything catchy so I may just switch to my name like others have done.
  4. Your work is in one of my raku books (S.Branfman). Horses and a great white heron - so beautiful!

      yes. I am. Thanks!

My raku pieces are also in Raku; a practical Approach by Steven as well plus lark's book on Raku and Advanced Raku by Bill Jones and Alternative Kiln by Watkins and Wandless.

  5. That sounds like a great idea! Think I've got to discuss this with another potter around here. Post pictures!
  6. the geese are headed north in huge flocks but we still have a ton of snow and its -16 right now????

They know something we do not.

it was 6 below here this morning....but I am certain it must be that cold or colder in Canada.....

  7. Ok- this is all great info! Thank you! I have delivered my roughed out cage to a metal shop. They are going to straighten out my joins so they are all in a straight line and weld the top circle to the cage top and put on a couple of big oversized but lightweight handles. What I did myself would have worked fine but I wanted it to look a little less rough. I actually bent the wire to 90 deg. by using a 5 lb sledge on a hard brick, then after putting the wire into a round barrel shape, I finished the hammering to "flat" on the inside. I cut the round shape for the top with a dremel tool.

From the album: Raku Kiln under construction

Day 1. Start collecting parts for my new raku kiln. So far, instruction book, lots of wire & a burner w hose. Day.2. Constructed basic cage frame, injured hand, took cage to a metal shop to make it sturdy & prettier! My hand doesn't look too pretty under this bandage but its just a scratch.
  9. One minor wound on my hand from the metal but I'm ok- did the basic construction of the raku kiln frame today then took it to a metal shop for a clean up of my work plus some nice big handles.

take care of your hand. I had to get a 1/4" piece of glass removed surgically from the back of my finger when I was drilling a support on the wall and leaned back on the floor. that took a while to heal. Keep your cut clean.

  10. I put a picture of what I've collected to build this so far on the gallery.

These days will not be consecutive! I still need a few bricks, ni-chrome or Kanthal wire, clay buttons & of course, the ceramic fibre.

nice wire. I am going to use 2" wide flashing on my new one.

  14. Ok- thanks! I'll check local first- that exchange rate is thru the roof right now. edit- just looked online- can you believe it- there's a place here called "metal supermarket" - who knew? This hobby leads one to unusual places! 2nd edit- at least I can comparison shop now with Zoro! (Can't believe someone called their company Zoro:))
  15. Does anyone know where to purchase the 1 sq in wire mesh that is the frame for this kiln? I don't think i've seen it at any of the hardware stores around where I live. They seem to just have wider grid mesh. Is there some sort of specialty store that sells sturdy wire mesh? (Not chicken wire). I am going to build this kiln as soon as I get this mesh! I have the burner and some of the bricks, I know where to get the ceramic fibre & the ni-chrome wire- I just have to find a source for the mesh.
  16. Its just something for people to say. Strange about that though- wonder why so many people revert to that trite comment when they know damn well that anything done well has a ton of hard work & perseverance behind it. Ask any student studying for finals- is it talent that gets the A? Or the reliable surgeon that has perfected a technique over decades vs. the newby that's doing the operation for the first time- I know who I'd prefer.
  17. Is that the little paperback with the smooth white wood kiln on the cover? It has a willow branch frame then coated with fire clay??? I want to build that one too but first I have to get around to building a raku kiln.
  18. I used to use those red ones to label core samples! I didn't know there was a high heat option- thanks! Looks like brown is the only one for high heat though.
  19. You could look at Superb Owl rather than that sporting event.
  20. just recycled a s___t load of Polar Ice. Its so expensive that you can't toss this stuff. Made out of  New Zealand halloysite.

Speaking of Plainsman, have you used any of their clays in ^10 soda?

    2. terrim8

For salt & soda : P700, H570 & H550. I like them all but 570 mixed with 550 is my favourite & it has a few speckles - Callie recommended that mix. The P700 is nice and even translucent a bit in part, even covered with slip when you hold something up to the light! I guess so far I have only used their clay.

Plainsman doesn't get involved in exploration, other than within a short radius around Medicine Hat.

  21. Still freezing.  I hate 'pages". Working on a small catalogue & things keep disappearing. Grrrrr..... #$@&^%**!!! software. And no- you tube isn't helpful so far- grrrrrrrr

ashamed to say that I called in one of my kids to help- I used word - which I'm used to and she'll convert it to pages that has a prettier template- Some days...............

That's what kids are for :D I used to type up most of my mums stuff because it would take me 1/10th of the time.

Problem is the conversion from Word etc. to Pages etc.and vice-versa is not always a two-way street. It is hard to shift from one system to another when one way is virtually automatic from years of experience and the "new" one has been perversely set up to be "backwards" & everything is in weird places. I feel your pain!

  22. freezing in my basement studio today

    1. glazenerd

Not been in my studio since mid November. Had the flu most of December, and the 0-10 degree weather does not suit me these days. I can heat my studio, just did not feel like doing it this year.
