Starting to read thru the gerstley borate substitute items on the forum. Has anyone tried Tom Buck's dry mix substitute? Or do you think its less problematic to just go with Gillespie Borate?

going to get a new burner today

Got my 2 new raku kilns sprayed with rigidizer. Now they just need the kiln shed finished to get them protected from the weather. Last year it snowed -22" around Sept. 15th. First frost ( its late this year) is expected next weekend. Happy to have those kilns out of the studio. I now have 3 raku kilns outside the dining room patio door. It makes it easy to read the pyrometer.

You sprayed the whole inside with rigidizer? I just did around the base rim , where the top sits. This is my first raku kiln- I guess if I have to do it over, at least the basket is good. Should I go get more rigidizer to spray the whole inside? Plus, I have burner problems- see my update. I'm learning the hard way. Much of my stuff is recycled. The insulation blanket was recycled & dusty. I picked up the burner that a drill crew left behind from a job. The bricks at the base were recycled from an old kiln, etc. I probably have to get a better tiger torch tomorrow.

anyone have a good patching mix for bisque? Thinking of trying to use paper clay as the patch material but the body is regular clay.

We send out our snow your way I think Marcia- but our weather is great today! I should have messaged Denice- I wondered where the drought was. The geese are flying north here today like they are late for a dinner reservation- huge flocks heading north, one after the next. They've been stuck here with bad weather for the last month. I think the bad weather is finally over now! I sat out on the porch this morning with just a cardigan in the bright sun and blinding white snow

You know how you southerners blame the Alberta Clipper for cold weather? I grew up during the cold war and we used to blame the cold weather on the Russians!

For salt & soda : P700, H570 & H550. I like them all but 570 mixed with 550 is my favourite & it has a few speckles - Callie recommended that mix. The P700 is nice and even translucent a bit in part, even covered with slip when you hold something up to the light! I guess so far I have only used their clay.

Finally, I got 8 items up in my website Shop. That means I now know how to do the next 100--all the behind-the-scenes integrated detail work involved, since no, you don't "just" upload a picture and slap a price on it!
