Raku I think but pit would be interesting. They take forever to dry!
I have them up in the kitchen- not the cold basement and they still aren't safe to bisque.

- go over to Saint Louis University & ask people in their Earth Sciences Dept.
As far as I know, crack formation - as you cool the melt, is rate dependent. Here's two extremes with the same material:
Thick silica layers of Obsidian cool slowly - not too many cracks. (deposited in volcanic layers)
Thin silica - Pele's Hair cools fast but it is thin (spewed out from the tail end of volcanic bombs!)

argggg..... tried a test firing today & didn't get to temp. My tiger torch burner has 100,000 BTU's. Tomorrow, I will pick up a 220,000 BTU torch - just the torch itself & try again.

Just thought it would be pretty hot even with the flame off! But we'll see. I'll likely try it out then decide if I need accessories!

I was really happy with their work. They had to tack weld down one side and around the top and the handles are big enough for my bulky gloves. I did realize though that I will have to hunt down a long flame proof apron or something to wear for the lift-off procedure.

Yep- that is my home-made prospected-for glaze that I had tested & was so glad that it passed the tests!

wish I still had it digitally. Its next to the Forestry office and their helicopter lands there.

yes we are lucky! Definitely want to go back, plus I think Callie was having a real hard look - lots of potters have moved there because of the facilities.

yes we did! tired though- its a 2-3 hr drive so no more pictures till tomorrow. Btw- this is the crazy clay of recycled H-550 with two cups of custer & two cups of Grolleg but I don't have a measurement on the volume of H-550 that was in the 5 gal bucket- maybe 3/4 full?
