Welp. Just finished spraying after 3.5 weeks of not touching a pot. Trying some new glaze combinations.

Someone should tell all these potters that.

  3. Firing another celadon test, progressing right along to perfect surfaces. On another note, just had the best throwing night of my life. Out of body experience, blissfulness and peace. Was freaking amazing.

posted the final glaze surface of all my testing in my gallery, three close ups of a cup. perfectly glossy and within limits. CAN it get any better... I am sure it can, more test to come.

No. I just accepted that batch is bonked and I am using it... I didn't even mix a new batch. I will try again later, for now I am just accepting that I have a 5 gallon bucket of speckled glaze and using it.

Were the 'duns' for dramatic effect?

  5. Firing Kiln. Been a while since I fired a full load of porcelain. Maybe I will finally have something to add to my profile.

      SHELF GRINDING TIME!

  6. Firing over 200 test tiles in the next few days over 4 glaze firings. Normal Slow Glaze ^6, Slow Glaze ^5+1Hour Hold, Slow Glaze ^6 + slow cool, Slow Glaze ^6 super slow cool. Want to see all the variants of the same glazes and how they behave differently. Should be interesting.

Some good looking glazes in the gallery :D Have you called them variation glazes or are they variegation glaze? Not easy with a bit of dyslexia.

    3. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

I dunno. Variation glazes because they add variety to my pots? I dont even know what variegation means lol... sorry for the confusion I will just change them to glazes.

    4. High Bridge Pottery

      High Bridge Pottery

Variegation is where the glaze splits into two different glass probably because of titanium.

  7. Firing some more test pots tonight, throwing a lot of clay tomorrow, mixing some more glaze that I ran out of and then changing my elements and doing a break in firing. Busy weekend.

Should I send you a case of Red Bull? 2 packs of No-Doz, and 5 gallons of coffee?

    2. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

No thanks. Just sweet tea does the trick.

  8. Firing some new glazes and combinations, designed for a slow cool schedule. Looking for that elusive semi matte with some variation. Pretty excited.

I think my work is going to go in a different direction for a while. I am interested in exploring some of the surfaces I got in my firing. Most of the pieces were poop, but there are spots on the pieces that are beautiful and very interesting.

  9. First porcelain glaze firing is cooking right now. So very excited.

  11. Found a new glaze I like, that matches my base glaze. A deep red with speckles of black where it breaks. Also switching to frost porcelain so lots of new changes. Testing TIME!

My only pottery dreams have consisted of me burning things down with kilns :D more worry than inspiration.

  13. Garage door insulation almost finished. It is already getting hot in there from my space heater + house door open. Literally could tell the difference in 1 hour.

Chilly, that's how it is with California. Except it's two drops of rain that stops us in our tracks. We drove down to L.A. last weekend after rain and there were accidents on every freeway.

  14. Getting back into pottery this coming week. I haven't touched clay in almost 2 months now.

Welp. Opened up some bags. Nice and moldy. Feels good to throw again. Started with a bowl as per usual.

  15. Glaze firing test schedule #6 for surface qualities. Almost there.

    1. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

I DID IT! After about 20 test firings with tweaking of glazes, bisque firing, and glaze firing. I finally have glossy glazes that I am proud to say are mine. Not only that but I achieved some beautiful results. I also solved my black clay bloating issue at the same time. Only took 5 months of work.

Except it rained today! So I am throwing 3# bowls all day. I forget how much I enjoy throwing bowls. Something so simple that is so complex to get a beautiful inside and outside curve. Plus all the different profiles. So enjoyable. Kiln at 650F. MUST RESIST.

Good the results are on my blog. I am scaling down my testing to 15% per load, and making the other 85% of my kiln for sale. Or that's the plan anyways.

      Get feeling better.

Thanks Evelyne. Joseph is fine. I need to just change my name on here to my name. Grype was just something I came up with a long time ago. Stands for gryphon.

So handy .... I'm fortunate that my dad is able to do those kinds of things because I'm not handy in that way at all. So he comes over and builds me shelves, and when he builds his own shelves, I go over and organize them for him in exchange. :)

Last order of clay I got from my supplier was almost soup. Had to dry it out on plaster boards. Next time I am opening a bag before I pick it up.

    3. Joseph Fireborn

      Joseph Fireborn

That would be awful. I want it soft but not soup or wet.

Check the made on date. My supplier stamps all their in shop clay. They are pretty good about rotation, it's (FIFO) First In First Out.

Unloaded a kiln of goblets for my aunts Agape youth retreat, mowed the lawn and then watched movies with my wife and brother Booter the rest of the night. We made vegan nice-cream. Hope you had a safe holiday also.

Thanks everyone for all the kind recommendations and all the personal messages. I didn't mean to scare everyone. It is just standard procedure infusions based on my treatments. Hope everyone has a good new year! I have a lot of reading to do in 2016.
