I re-fired slightly less than golden brown cranberry orange nut bread. Then I made pecan bars like my grandmother's..Fun to taste a childhood memory. Sort of a pecan laden toffee on a crumbly crust.

  3. Thanks Sputty. Dante is an interesting character. He was banished from Florence and ended up in Ravenna where he is buried. There is an empty tomb in santa Croce in Florence , not far from his home, now a museum. Florence wants him back. They have been feuding for a long time. Marcia
  4. I am writing an article about a woman whose work I admire. During our interview, she said she came to realize she didn't have to keep going here and there to study , apprentice with a Korean master, work collaboratively with an artist on a collaborative installation for a museum. She has settled in Barcelona for the past 5 years and realizes the journey in clay never ends even if you remain in one place. so my question would be: where has your journey in clay taken you; either geographically, aesthetically, philosophically, product wise? Otherwise to quote an ancient philosopher and I think it was a Dante, but I may be wrong. he said literature can be interpreted : literally, metaphorically, allegorically, or metaphysically. so your answer can be in the previously mentioned categories. Marcia
  5. shipped off work from recent firing. Feeling caught up after 3 weeks of a cold.

That is how it works. You get caught up just in time to get behind again.

  6. while it was sunny yesterday, I rebuilt my new foundation for a larger raku kiln. It bothered me that the original foundation was the same as my old kiln which was a struggle for my ceramic saggers to fit into reasonably. Happy I redid it. only took 2 hours. Ordered new kiln shelves for this configuration. Now can proceed to build the fiber /steel chamber for the pulley system.

    Yay progress.

Where in the world do you get all of your energy! Would that I could, but the shop is freezing up at night and takes half the day to warm up. Keep on keeping one! best, Pres

Pres, what are electric rates where you live? I have these great little heaters that Antionette uses in TN. How big is your shop?

I have 5 of these to heat comfortably my 650 sq ft studio. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Convection-Flat-Space-Heater-Wall-Mount-Electric-400W-Energy-Efficient-Slim-Heat/172978989419?epid=1445404048&hash=item284659e96b:g:IAUAAOSwrFtaChF3

even if you just had them  1 or 2 near your wheel, it could be nice. I have my clay ,50 gallon garbage cans on wheels or  boxes on carts on wheels set near several of them around the studio..

I have been taking these vitamins recommended to me by a nurse practitioner at the wellness center decades ago. you can find them on eBay. Seriously, they helped me get better from Fibromyalgia along with retiring.

  7. Interesting explanation. I had a very similar glaze to the one immediately above from ^9 crystalline glaze research from 1908 University of Illinois dept. of ceramics engineering. here is a frit equivalent chart. Don't know if it will help. http://www.ceramicstoday.com/frits.htm Marcia
  8. Just back from a very busy 2 weeks away to see family and wedding. Got a dreadful cold. Still sick but at least I'm home.

  10. Plainsmen 340

One of my students who was from a ranch in central MT said that Plainsmen mined on their ranch, shipped it to canada and refined it. Who knows. that was 30years ago.

I was in their office & there was a map on the wall with all their deposits. Everything was distributed sort of like a circle around Medicine hat & part of that circle crossed the border so you are correct. they were really complaining  about the costs of some stuff that came from further away in the US so there must be some ingredients that they have to order from other places.

  11. Shipped off the work fired in good  weather we had for a few days last week. Spent today packing, shoveling snow and warming up the car..digging it out of snow, and taking boxes to the PO. Came home and cleaned up styrofoam bead snowstorm where I'd been packing.

    Raku

I have been making raku slabs since the early 1980s. In the Spring day I was driving by a herd of Black Angus on Spring green pastures. I instantly responded RAKU! I had a class in the Pryor Mountains (Horse Whisperer) and we were surrounded by a herd of wild horses that appeared out of a cloud. It was magic! I make horses too. Now I am seeing lots of exotic Birds.
  13. From the album: Raku

On Tuesday some friends helped me install the new lid with counter weight in my kiln shed. On Monday same friends dugs a hole for gravel for my raku kiln. I filled it with gravel and laid the half cinder blocks. After I put the cinderblocks down, they moved the frame in place. Today I raised the floor to a double cinderblock height . This weekend I will work of the stainless steel chamber lined with fiber. Beautiful weather after our early snow last week.
  14. My previous post should have read more snow now, and more coming, ...sigh. Fired raku this evening with snow still on the ground.

I did get three more firings done. The next morning at 7 I ran out and covered the kiln. by 11 am it started 6 hours before the forecast predicted. Today is supposed to be nice then more snow. But the air is fresh and clean. My next firing will be sagger and they can sit to cool without the drama. Feeling better about scheduling  firings and obligations for pieces. Obvara is going to have to wait for a warming trend.

  15.  more now. and more.(sigh)

  16. priority takes control. Firing and shipping orders.

  17. Just back from Barcelona. Couldn't resist a visit to see my husband. Now for some serious work. Shipping, raku chamber construction, local obligations. "So little time, much to do"

  18. Visited friends at El Torn today in Barcelona and went to s Flamenco performance , Tribute to Paco de Locca at the Palau de La Musica.

      Hi Marcia,

We are looking into adding the link to the Ceramic Arts Network homepage to the navigation bar at the top. From there you can access Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making Illus., ICAN etc. Hope to have it up there in the next day or so. For now, here is the link: https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/

      Thanks,

      Jen
