Looks like it was just hewn and polished, fresh from the quarry. One of the more exceptional examples of minimalism I have seen. Well done!

Hoping for some rain today to wash away the yellow snow (pollen) that's covering everything in central NC right now.  Azaleas and dogwoods are in full bloom - daffodils and lily magnolia blooms are a distant memory.  Although expecting a low of 34F tonight.......

      Hi Marcia,

We are looking into adding the link to the Ceramic Arts Network homepage to the navigation bar at the top. From there you can access Ceramics Monthly, Pottery Making Illus., ICAN etc. Hope to have it up there in the next day or so. For now, here is the link: https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/

      Thanks,

I re-fired slightly less than golden brown cranberry orange nut bread. Then I made pecan bars like my grandmother's..Fun to taste a childhood memory. Sort of a pecan laden toffee on a crumbly crust.

      That's awesome Marcia!

In regards to the snowy walkway, just have a dedicate snowblower ready at the beginning of the path, and you can just easily clear the way, as you walk to the shed.

No need to pull a muscle, or tire yourself out, before you even start working.

finally got an electric I can carry thru the house from back to front. ..after losing 20 pounds from shoveling. We had 200% normal snowfall last winter beginning with 22" in Sept.

I do not envy those, in the Northern US, and obviously places North of that.

We get a decent amount of snow here, but nothing like that.  I got my current snow blower at the end of a record setting Winter, in terms of snowfall.

So I did my driveway, by hand all season, then got the snow blower.  We haven't had a season like that since...

  11. Finished writing my article for PMI. Pieces selling well and I need to send more shipments to galleries. Back to throwing.

  12. fired a few more saggar pieces yesterday. Waiting for the snow to return. The accumulated snow in the north yard ranges from 1 ft. to 3 ft. but the patio is clear and where I have my kiln right now.  It is nice to be able to watch the pyrometer while cooking dinner.

Much like last Winter, we have been lacking with the snow.  Last February, my wife and I expected to have to drive to the hospital, in a blizzard, while she was in labor.  Instead, it was in the 70s that week...  Thus far, this Winter we have had some accumulating snow, but after numerous days above freezing, it is all but gone.

      Weird weather...

I spent 2 hours today chopping ice off the driveway. Snow is melting and freezing. We've had a total of about 40 inches this year. Where shoveled off the pavement dries. I have my kiln on the patio covered with a big metal basin over a plastic wrap.

  13. Fired a sagger firing today. Here are my 3 favorites from that.dkgreenandbrown.jpg.86aad6f7339bd88680963352229655ff.jpgrustandgreen.jpg.60dd0cb40ce4fab88911187a99c20bbb.jpg59ceef4e2d5d3_yellowwblacklines.jpg.62e46a8b0fff1e98cff80ba25bbb81a0.jpg

  14. fired my test kiln yesterday. Loaded at 23 degrees, went down to -6 overnight. Not in a heated shed. That little kiln is 20+ years old. Only replaced a switch on it over this time. I have a spare element in case I need it. It just has a cone sitter and timer. Its a Crucible from Seattle pottery.

just started firing tonight. Thought tomorrow was going to be nice. Wrong. Wind and snow. So while it is nice today, I got it loaded and firing. Should be done turning it up by 9...my bedtime.  Timer and cone setter should take care of the rest. I'll check it about 5 am.

Firing espresso cups for Matt to take back to DC, mugs for a friend and tea bowls for another friend. The back to show pieces.

there was a really strong wind last night as well as my motion detector light on the kiln shed going on and off. Checked the kiln at midnight. It was off. Shut off security light and went back to sleep.

Will unload after I walk the dog.

  16. Got  my 2 new raku kilns sprayed with rigidizer. Now they just need the kiln shed finished to get them protected from the weather. Last year it snowed -22" around Sept. 15th. First frost ( its late this year) is expected next weekend. Happy to have those kilns out of the studio. I now have 3 raku kilns outside the dining room patio door.  It makes it easy to read the pyrometer.3rakukilnssmall.jpg.26fc1b75a9b0421dd52ddab4ccaa9ae1.jpg

My  extension to old wooden kiln shed weill have all metal clear story with windows and exhaust fans 2 barn doors and 14 ft ceiling slanting down to10 or 12'. I already have 4 kilns to go inside. My tiny demo kiln I built for taping my online courses. I have a sawed -ed oil drum with the tope third removed, a 2' high x 2'wide chamber to sit on brick plus my large pulley or topcoat kiln. Very excite to be able to fire in winter. BUT I do regret not being able to fire much this summer.

but on our last day of -20 I tried out the wood skis and they're fast! I had to re-camber them with a clothes steamer and wooden blocks, get pine tar on them then polar kick wax as glide wax! So different that modern xc skis!!!

  21. Home alone again. Husband returned to Va. to work. He was telecommuting for 2 of the three weeks he was here. He did manage to do some jam sessions at the Snowcreek saloon. Mother-in-law spent a week over Christmas with us. I am now back to the studio. I did some reorganizing of layout to improve heat flow. its nice in there when the temperature i up to high 30s. Around -10 the studio temperature went down to 55. I have a kerosene backup if I need it.

Happy to be in the studio again.

My studio in the basement is unheated.  I use a small room heater when the temp drops, but I don't like the fan blowing.  So I was thinking of getting one of the radiant wall heaters....But my space is very small....10x11.  In the shop where I glaze/spray booth/kiln is unheated and very well insulated.  So a small space heater will take the chill off quickly.  I found those radiant wall heaters on Amazon.  Very reasonable.

I noticed many people not using images. I have been searching for info on how to change avatar. Use to be easy..just "make this my avatar".

So anyone know-how the new system allows changing the avatar?

It has been a pleasure watching you develop this new firing technique. Hopefully you will submit an article on the technical requirements required to produce this very unique glaze effect. I will catch up with you at NCECA soon.
