Claybody customized to add mane, braid, stud bridle and shoes myself, then under glazed to a dappled grey. Finished in satin glaze with low fired yellow gold buckles and white gold bit and shoes by Hyn Patty, 2006. Piece measures approximately 8 inches tall by 10 inches long - Private collection, sold for just under $4k at public auction. 2007 Realistic Equine Sculpture Society Best Custom Glazed Ceramic and People's Choice Awards.
  5. Now, to give you a sense of what 'curio' scale means here is the same bisque shown in my hand. Here I have airbrushed on underglaze in greys and black and I am now dappling him. Once fired with a clear glaze over this underglaze, he will be a dappled grey! This is a sales piece that I will be offering at auction probably next weekend while I'm at a live show event. But for now there's a lot of work to do to him to get him ready to be the new sample of my sculpture in ceramic! I'll post more photos as I go so you all can see the finished boy when he's done. I work in many layers, fire a number of times, and will also work in over glazes. The upright mane ribbons will be added later after he's completed and are going to be enameled metal but I haven't finished making them yet. They each fit down into little holes I have drilled down his neck. I am also making mold pieces for a larger 'traditional' scale version of this boy that stands about 8 inches tall. I hope to have that one casting by June in time for a huge international event I'm attending in July at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY.
  6. This is Porths, my first version of this sculpture I started way back about 2007, almost completed in 2009 before illness derailed my studio for a while. At any rate, I FINALLY finished this boy last year and released him in a resin edition. I've since gone on to do a 'hairy' Pasture Porthos who's a bit chunkier, and with more feather, thicker legs, long mane and swishy Fabio tail who's casting in a resin edition this year. Anyway, I've been busting butt to make MOLDS for these two versions of my Porthos sculpture. Currently I am having the hairy Pasture Porthos molded and cast in England in fine bone china, though I'm also about to start testing slip and settlers for fine bone china pieces here in my studio later this year. Meanwhile I'm focusing first on using finely ball milled earthenware with talc to cast some pieces. This first one I've molded right here in studio is what we call Curio scale, a large mini in size. He's my test cast to see if my mold worked (it did first try!) and to help me figure out how I want to rework and clean up my mold pieces to work even better. Then I'll be making rubber molds starting next week of each plaster mold piece so I'll have a master from which to cast as many plaster replacement molds as I ever will want, later. So here's my first ceramic bisque of Porthos with his original docked tail version (mane flights to be added later), an American Percheron with tail bows.

  10. Srry i hadmissedso many lovely replies, been sick as a dog and kind of on the mend. @Kelly in AK @Min i too thoight it was being overfired. This is a vitreous clay but even when i fore it a cone below maturity its bloating. My conclusion is my piss poor ability to wedge is leaving suoer concentrated pockets of frit in areas of the clay that are then causing the blaoting when fired due to the off gassing/inconsistencies to surrounding body... or at least thats what ive been able to glean frm the interwebs. If the better wedge/mix doesnt fix then more testing until fault is fixed will be pursued, if and when i can move again. Silly body. @neilestrick buying bags of clay, too science bound to touch anything without a reliable analysis at this stage. Also cant dig due to health so bags are serving all my needs... you know except the one where my stoneware recipe doesnt bloat hahaha. On a separate note, has anyone else had difficulty getting responses from bluebird? I asked them about warranty information on the machine as i have the original documents amd they were mum. Pug updates: before becoming ill i began my little restoration efforts. I was pleasantly surprised that the rust is coming up eith reltive ease over the majority of the machine. There is a cam associated with deairing chamber that is worn all the way through and if bluebird does not respond to replacement oarts request, i guess im going to have to get that heifer welded somewhere because im not sure the part for the 440 listed on their site will fit. In other news i have sourced a material which i believe will seal the metal and prevemt future corrosion. Its called Rust Grip. Its an expensive venture but all research indicates this will remediate and prevent this problem in the future. Or perhaps its wishful thinking. And it beats the 11k i woukd have to spend for a new machine. Will post update pics asap
  11. Is it only commercial glazes you are interested in? If you are firing lowfire you can still use a commercial raku glaze then stain the crazing with calligraphy ink (or china paints with a subsequent very low firing).
  12. This would probably work, but the crazing you will get with most commercial crackle glazes will be much finer than the example photos you posted. You will need to go over the pot with India ink after firing to get dark color into the cracks.
  13. Did you eventually get it to fit? I had the same issue with my model A and I had keep rotating the splash pan around the wheel head until I found a spot where both pieces would slide in correctly. It is possible, though!

  15. two layers of 1/2” Hardibacker board will give you some peace. No mixing plaster, woohoo! Great to wedge on, dimensionally satble, easy to get. I still use it for wedging and working surfaces, as well as ware boards. Pulls water out aggressively. It will saturate eventually, the same issue happens to terra cotta planter plates which I also use for small batches. Of course it happens with plaster too,
  16. Most buyers of used studio equipment are hobby potters, and people looking for a used slab roller are looking for a deal. Unfortunately Brents are not one of the more desirable models due to the way you have to add or remove boards to adjust the thickness of the slab. It's also a very long, which can be difficult to fit in a lot of home studios, and the cable system is not fun to replace when they wear out. There are good new slab rollers with infinite dial adjustments and a smaller footprint like Shimpo or Northstar that sell for $1000-1500, so I think that realistically you need to come in under that.
  17. It appears to be in very good condition, but I agree that price is too high for a manual kiln.
  18. That is a Brent pottery wheel. There should be a model number somewhere on the side or on the control box. You could place an ad here in the marketplace section, or on Facebook Marketplace, or Craigslist. If it's in good working condition you could get several hundred dollars for it depending on the model.
  19. Looking to do the crackle effect on a piece, and finding few color options when it comes to ready made crackle glazes. Could a similar effect be achieved by using a color underglaze with CLEAR crackle glaze on top? I realize most to the best crackle effects are achieved in Roku firing, but would love to get a matte surface with crackle.... and electric kiln.

  21. I am a buyer of abandoned storage units. I recently came across this pottery wheel. I have been looking for some place to sell it. I am in central Florida and there appears to only one place here that even does pottery classes. Nobody is able to send me in the right direction. Can anyone tell me what type it is. It also has a clear container with tools for making pottery.

  23. I have attempted to contact Laguna twice before about a different clay (Laguna 65) and received a reply that they were forwarding my question to someone else -- never heard back. So I probably won't contact them again. I recently purchased a box of M390 and threw some test bowls. I am including them in my next series of tests to see what the results are -- figured if Tony had success on M390 with the glaze G 3806 that I could use that as a comparison for the results on the Laguna 613 and go from there. He uses the C6DHSC firing schedule so if I don't have good results on the M390 it will indicate that something else is going on that I haven't thought about. As part of covering all the bases I'm bisquing a few bowls at ^02 for comparison. Going to give the Laguna clay about another 2 weeks to reveal its mysteries then abandon ship (I only have 6 bags left). -- 6 more glaze firings to go (the golf course is calling!) The good thing is that I am really good at throwing test bowls now.

  25. Do you apply the paperclay before or after you've assembled the nest? I wonder if something less substantial than twigs would burn-out better after coating with paperclay.   26. It seems like you are going through an inordinate amount of glaze testing to solve what really appears to be a clay problem. Have you tried contacting Laguna with the batch number and asking them if they have any thoughts on this? Is using a different red clay an option? @Callie Beller Diesel uses Plainsman M390 very successfully, is this an option for you? Could you use the clay you bought for another purpose?

  28. My mom just retired as a potter in Boulder Colorado and has a very nice Brent slab roller for sale to clear out her studio. I have no idea how much such an item would be worth. The closest new model is $3K. Any ideas how much these things go for used? It's bed is 26” wide X 76” long and 35” high. It's a floor mount unit with the large turn wheel. Closest comp is the Brent 20.
  29. Looks like the motor would be in the way. Agreed, the pulley appears to be fixed to the shaft by that bolt; perhaps it is stuck? Perhaps start on that with penetrating oil that dissolves rust/corrosion.

      I recently purchased a used "Duncan - The Teacher" kiln and cannot get it to work.   I am powering it with a NEMA plug and 8/3 wire to a 40 amp breaker [unit is rated at 2700 amps].  It is only 8' from the breaker panel.  I have tested the outlet and it has power.  Can anyone advise me with this problem?

      Has anyone tried using a ceramic fibre kiln for soda firing by coating the fibre with a high-zirconia coating to protect it from erosion. The coating would still erode, but it might do so sufficiently slowly to prtoct the fibre, though it would need to be reapplied from time to time. Any comments, especially any actual experience?
