This work was inspired by a visit from some friends from China, They are two of the top jade carvers from the City of Suzhou, China. I was going to have them sign the wall of my studio to mark their visit but did not have the wall ready, so i decided to throw these two forms and then have them carve the outside instead. they did this carving on the outside and writing around the back for me, it took them around 30 minutes once everything got going.
a little bit about the work, these were quickly thrown using roughly 7 or 8 lbs of clay for each piece. the clay is Laguna Soldate 60, I threw 4 cylinders and immediately joined and altered the forms to make both vessels. these were done rough and dirty with no trimming, they stand roughly 18" tall and I've been testing a simple black iron celadon glaze formula from John Britt's book on cone 10 high fire glazes for the surface
