My goal for these pieces was to create art straight from nature. The glazing was an intricate process. I used a combo of underglazing, red and yellow iron oxide staining, and a patchy gloss glaze on top. The result was a ceramic leaf that could pass for the real thing.
Having only fired in a wood kiln twice, I have enjoyed the camaraderie and results of wood firing. Being a grad student at SIUC has allowed me to experiment with different materials and techniques. The wood kiln asks for a willingness to think differently. Our kiln is on the small size and an arch style. The last firing took less than 24 hours but we were ash heavy!
