Thank you Callie and Magnolia. I’m definitely interested in experimenting to find my own expression of textured surface, but loving the flow of ideas as we consider options to help start in a close approximation. What I do know based on things Hashimoto has shared is that this is only slip. And the demo videos show a very liquid glaze-like consistency poured and brushed. I have the sense in the case of the black that he slips, it crackles before or during the first firing, then he slips again and wipes. At least that’s what I’ve seen in videos. Like any deeply interested student, I’d love to closely replicate this to grow it in my own direction and see what I truly enjoy with this kind of surface. I am happy to start with recipes and experiment from there. I don’t have much access to generous well-taught American-style teachers where I live. So ya’ll are my “call a friend” ha ha. I have a lot of supplies ie colorants, fluxes etc from the states (where I’m from). But I’m very much a novice so hoping some generous person here will share their insight regarding this from a slip perspective. Also, I’m just geeking out. Thanks all! Cheers!! -

I think I´m looking for similar advice Stevie. Are the crackle slip variations of Hashimoto of interest to you? I´ve posted several photos (drool). I would love to get into this specific topic more and hopefully get some good tips! Let me know if this is what you´re interested in. I think we might have the makings of a study group with @Pawelpksa?? xoxo - Heather -
Hi there! Oh, so nice to meet a fellow Hashimoto-lover!!! I posted a thread about this, ALSO looking for ideas of how to experiment (with less trial and error) with these kind of surfaces. Want to join the discussion so we can get some visibility and answers? Cheers from Chile. - Heather

I have a deep and enduring fascination (infatuation?) with Japanese ceramic surfaces, but modern matte ones get me weak in the knees. I have been crushing all over Hashimoto´s black crackle slip/engobe, metallic cracks, and overall textured slip surfaces (check out those interiors) for about a year. Hive mind, how does he do it? Composition ideas? Kohiki "light" with manganese? Double firing? I´d love to experiment with similar textures... but don´t find much info out there on formulating this texture. Cheers and love from Chile! xo - Heather

Dealing w pitted wheel head
HeatherArtLife replied to HeatherArtLife's topic in Studio Operations and Making Work
I am throwing with a "imperceptible grog" white Spanish clay. @JohnnyKYes, water and clay dried there after throwing but in a humid environment for a few days, so corroded. I´d never seen this before and sort of freaked. I will be taking MUCH better care in the future. I throw directly on the wheel but will transition to plaster bats soon... she´s my baby and I just want her sparkle back! Ha ha. Thanks EVERyONE. Adore this community. xoxo H -

Dealing w pitted wheel head

Oh, thanks @marc and @Hyn Patty! Appreciate it!! -
Hi friends! This wheel head is “pitted”?? It’s the Shimpo whisper alloy head and fairly new. Just a bad choice of leaving moisture on it too long. :( Can I throw on it as is?? Treatments to save it?? Thank you all! Heather

Propane gas set up DIY - what is needed?
HeatherArtLife replied to HeatherArtLife's topic in Equipment Use and Repair
So just as a follow up and for posterity... 1. Marc Ward is incredibly helpful and kind, and helped me determine which burner and a few other aspects to this project http://www.wardburner.com/burners/venturiburners.html - Thanks again Neil for the recommendation to call him up! 2. For the kiln size here (18 x 18 x 24-ish) and for the breadth of firing (bisque, single-fire, cone 6 and up to cone 10/11) we determined that the m100 is best, and I will be getting the kit from them. Also, he helped me to understand the gas tank sizing and best-practices (45 kilo tank, or better-yet TWO tanks to limit freezing). Another thing we talked about was pyrometers vs. cones (or the combination) and in the end it seems that going with cones and foregoing the pyrometer is fine. Nick or anyone else have thoughts on this? Cheers! Heather -

Since you mentioned... what is the appropriate variation if I wish to try out soda/salt fire? I have read that soda is less corrosive than salt, and less likely to affect future firings of a non-soda nature... I of course was taught to keep dedicated kilns for soda/salt but I would love the freedom to experiment at home with one kiln (and since I have very few options to find salt/soda kilns here in Chile to experiment with). xo -

P.S. For informational purposes (and general PSA sans endorsement) I found the kiln plans here on Briggs´s Etsy store https://www.etsy.com/listing/545625524/build-your-own-brick-raku-kiln-ceramics -

Brilliant, thank you. Yes, a box kiln for this first go . This is the first I´ve seen a bag wall mentioned in a small brick gas kiln... do you think it is entirely necessary? How do you feel about the attached option? Its from Robert Briggs´s plans for a raku kiln... BTW, he mentions using the Glouster Gold brick, which I think is a hard brick, thus the ceramic fiber blanket. But with soft fire brick, I think this fiber step is not necessary... yet perhaps I would evaluate costs if they are equally efficient and have similar longevity. Thoughts? Also, Neil where can I buy you a cup of coffee?? xo
