Sending Samples - Who Pays Shipping?

27 March 2014 - 08:26 AM

I've sent a few samples to shops/galleries in the past, but never overseas, as per a recent request. Do galleries usually pay the shipping on samples? It is usually only a few items, but it could get expensive if it happens often and/or to far away locations. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Mailing Lists

24 December 2013 - 08:31 PM

I need to organize yet another part of selling ceramics - mailing lists. I think I should probably have two separate ones - a retail one, and a wholesale one for shops that buy from me wholesale...not sure how to do it. How do others manage this kind of tracking of who has bought from you in the past, what they've ordered and how often to send updates, news, etc.? Computer spread sheets, a notebook, a group email list that you add to? Any advice is welcome!

Turkey Baster For Glazing

26 November 2013 - 03:37 PM

I went into big Y today to get a turkey baster for squirting glaze inside some bud vases, but was totally in my own world, forgetting that Thanksgiving is in two days. Was surprised when the check-out woman wanted to talk turkey recipes / techniques. Thought it would be kind of hard to explain my real purpose, and kind of unfriendly since we were having such a good bonding moment, so I played along. Shook my head as I left. I have to get out of the studio more, clearly!!

Glaze Defect - What Is It? Weird And Crusty....

22 November 2013 - 09:09 AM

Attached is a picture of something that keeps happening in my kiln. It only affects 1-2 pieces per firing, but it is getting tiresome. Can anyone tell me what it is? It is like a chalky / salty textured blemish that is dry and crusty looking. Any thoughts would be extremely helpful since I lost two pieces that I needed for an order to this menace!

Hairline Fractures On B-Mix 5 - Dishwasher?

12 November 2013 - 09:07 PM

Two cups that I made were returned to a store a month or two after the customer bought them because they developed hairline fractures. The shop owner emailed me asking if it might be a fault with the ware. I can't imagine it would be, they are made out of B-mix 5 and fired to temperature (or slightly higher). I am kind of assuming that they were bumped knocked (human error)....My only other thought is that they are thrown fairly thinly - could it be that washing them in a dishwasher is a bit harsh if they are on the fragile side - not from heat but maybe water spray pressure or something?? I don't actually own a dishwasher, so I don't have any idea what they are like on ceramics, although it seems that the common consensus is that any ware that is vitreous should be dishwasher safe... Any thoughts?
