Refining Fine Grog

10 December 2012 - 11:25 PM

I just bought a bag of Fine Grog. However on closer inspection its not so fine as I expected. Is there a dust safe way to make it finer? Would most people use a mortar and pestle?

Mixing porcelain clays

15 November 2012 - 11:59 PM

I would like to mix a porcelain clay body with a stoneware clay body.
Has anybody tried this before?
What happens after a bisque fire?
Which temperature do you follow for the bisque & glaze fire - the porcelain body or the stoneware?
When it comes to glazing, can I use an earthenware premixed glaze on this mixed body?
Will it be food safe if I leave it unglazed?

Thanks for any advice most welcome! I haven't a clue.

Sodium silicatate substitute?

01 June 2012 - 01:00 AM

If someone needs are large amount of sodium silicate / magic water
I wondered if Sugar Soap is a safe substitute to use instead of Terra Sigillata?

I checked out the ingredients in Selley's Sugar Soap powder and it has the exact ingredients
as the Magic Water terra sigillata recipe I discovered on the Ceramics Arts Daily forum.

Neutral salts 60% -
Sodium carbonate -30%
Sodium metasilicate,
pentahydrate -10%

Other ingredients determined
not to be hazardous
