bciskepottery
A flashing recipe I'm interested in calls for zircon flour. Would zircopax or superpax be a substitute? Not really interested in ball milling zircon sand to zircon flour.
Mark C.
My use of milled Zircon shows me its an extremely tough and high melt material-I use it in kiln coating with colloidal silica. Hemer koalin flashes well if that helps. I would be interested in any Zircon that would melt and flash? Mark

Mark C.
Wow the melt point for Zircan flour is 2200-C so its going to still be there. My zircon is from Laguna and its milled to 300 mesh if I recall. I can look in my laguna book in am on this stuff as I left studion after a 12 hour glaze and load day and Im staying out till I turn kilns on in am. I am wooped. Let us know how this turns out when you try it. Mark
Babs
Is Zircon usually sold as Zirconium Silicate or is that a different beast. I have a bucket of Zircon, like very fine sand, it used to be mined from a beach close by, along with ruitile and ilmenite. When you leave those beaches your feet are black from the rutile and ilmenite deposits. Zircopax is a generic brand name of zirconium silicate or zircon (see Zircon for more information). Digitalfire.. Zircopax. Zircon opacifier, no longer being manufactured. See zirconium silicate. Toxic in inhalation. Source: Clay: A Studio Handbook this is from ceramics arts daily glossary. Mark C.
My update laguna book (4/11) says Zircon,G milled ZrSiO4 an opacifier which controls texture and craze resistance in glazes. I use it as I said as a kiln coating. looks like zircopax plus is the same chemical-ZrSiO4 and the book says it replaced Ultrox and regular Zircopax and superpax which are no longer avaliable it says Mark
