Any Way To Get An Off Topic Forum?

But, no; for srss.

It WOULD be really, REALLY nice to have a section where the members here could squirrel talk. ^_^ Some of us have developed awesome friendships with each other, and we only have a limited private message system in place here to communicate with. And what if something amazing happened to us that isn't clay-related, but we'd like to share anyway? It'd be great to be able to post it in a section that won't give the staff heartburn.

Maybe call it...The Mud Room? ^_^

A while ago this came up, but there was no response or follow-up from anyone who I guess would be "in charge".  I agree, it would be wonderful to have such a forum. I am using this community for a lot more than just technical tips and the pleasure of seeing other people's work. I am new here and not that active as a ceramist (yet/I hope) and I derive a lot of needed support from everyone. Sometimes I worry about getting too "personal" when I really just want to communicate more fully. So to have a specific place to whine and moan and brag and share and laugh, even if the issue is not always one of clay, would be great. I assume the problem would be finding a moderator who could and would put in the time, if that is permissible via CAD. Is this a question for the Potters Council forum???

i'm too tech challenged to find the right place to post anything but i put stuff on the community challenge 2 thingy just now because that is where i was reading what i wanted to respond to.  or something like that.  too worn out after all day in the sun and fresh air to make sense.   well, what's new about that?

Guest Sherman

Everyone,

We have considered this idea very carefully, but feel it is important for this forum to maintain a focus on ceramics. An off-topic section would add moderation duties to already busy volunteers, and adding more at this stage would get quite unwieldy.

We understand that users are forming personal friendships here, which we encourage and support. There are many other places on the Internet where friends can connect and share the non-ceramics aspects of their lives, such as Facebook and Twitter. If a forum user establishes a Facebook group (or a similar online space) for this purpose, that person is welcome to announce it here—though it cannot be named after this forum or website in any way.

We have carefully considered and understand your request, and I hope you all understand the necessity to keep this forum focused on ceramics.

Sincerely, and on behalf of the mods and admins,

Sherman

Guinea ... If you feel that strongly about having a chat area, just start a private, invitation only group on Facebook. It's not hard to do, it's free and you can chat all you want with the level of moderation being up to you. I have one for colored clay ... It only took a few minutes to set up.

I second Sherman and Chris in this. Thank you Sherman for giving a definite answer to this wish. I too think that we should leave this forum solely to questions and answers having to do with clay and all that's going with it like glazes, techniques, kilns, firings, aesthetics, tools, art, schooling, benefits and so on.

I would love though to see some of you who wished an off topic to start something like it on another social media site. Why not on facebook? I would apply as a group member if asked to join!

Thank you AndyL to put this topic forward again, so that we get an answer and can leave it for good.

And thank you all for your understanding.

Evelyne

In oh so many ways, the software used for the Forum is not what you want to use for social media.  The Forum has over 14,000 members.  And, it allows non-members to parse the various topics and threads.  Just now, the ratio of guests to members is about 7 to 1.  And, Google, Yahoo, Bing, and numerous other search engines document the topics and threads -- all available to anyone doing a search on a work, person, or topic mentioned in the forums.  All of our conversations -- and their content, both pottery and ceramics related and the personal tidbits of info we also include at times -- is out there for the world.  Seriously, is this the place you want to have "off-topic" conversations which may tend to be highly personal . . . shared with the world?

There are far better platforms available to do that type of messaging without the fear of having a bazillion lurkers reading your every word.  CAD chose a fairly good blogging software application for the Forum; that requirement is not the same as what you would want in a messaging software.
