Jennifer Mccurdy Workshop

Recommended Posts

Last Sunday I attended a workshop at Bailey Pottery in Kingston, NY, where Jennifer MCCurdy was demonstrating. If you are not familiar with her work I posted a few photos of pieces that she displayed. They are made of porcelain and fired to cone 10 and exquisitely hand carved and left in a beautifully smooth bisque state. She was charming, funny and very down-to-earth about her processes and led us step by step through each. The class began with a brief slide show beginning with her early work and she narrated a personal history and her 30 year journey with clay. She then threw three different pieces and provided a running commentary including details about the clay, her tools, and her technique. The afternoon session focused on how she altered and carved these pieces with detailed explanations. She answered many questions about her life in the studio, her daily schedule, firing, workshops and gallery shows and I came away feeling I really knew her and appreciated her work so much more than when I first discovered it online a few years ago.

Bailey Pottery could not have been more gracious and accommodating to us, especially Jim Bailey. They provided a comfortable and inviting space for us and Jennifer. Our group of about 25 participants were from all over the ceramics community, including teachers, hobbyists and professionals. They provided a delicious and abundant breakfast and lunch and we were able to purchase supplies at their fantastic showroom.

If you are ever able to attend a workshop hosted by Jennifer MCCurdy you should try even if its a few hour drive from your home. You will have an amazing time and learn a lot. Some of her upcoming shows are on her website which can be googled.

How extremely fortunate you are to own one of her pieces. The photos I posted show a few examples but they are way out of my price range. She deserves every cent of it especially after seeing her in action.

Paul: I'am so happy for you that you finally could attend Jennifer's workshop. Thank you very much for the interesting comment about the course! While in Providence, like Marcia already said, there was a piece of hers in the Potters Council show, and we who babysat the booth could marvel at the beautiful piece. I hope she'll come to Switzerland one day to do a workshop here.
