Kiln Vent

Recommended Posts

If the vent fan is mounted under the kiln like the original Envirovent and Orton Vent, it should be left on until the kiln gets down to 1400F so it doesn't overheat the motor. If the fan is mounted away from the kiln, you can turn it off whenever you want.

H, I just got my first kiln  and have a question about venting. I am going to built my own vent that will suck air from the bottom of the vent like the Skutt Envirovent 2. Now my question is when should the vent be on? Throughout the firing? Thanks!

I would turn it on from the very beginning so that it vents out moisture that is evaporating from the clay. This is one of the benefits of venting that is rarely mentioned. Kilns with vents tend to corrode much less than unvented kilns since the moisture (and fumes) is pulled from the kiln before it can seep out and corrode the metal parts. The metal parts on the kiln last longer, especially all the connections in the control box.
