Just Because The Sale Is Next Week!

Recommended Posts

my sears, DeVilbis, 8 gallon, 2 horsepower, 125psi compressor started to smell like burning oil as i cranked it up to spray the many pots i need to glaze and fire before next friday.  turned it off immediately.  cannot find a way to take the plastic cover off.  the holes where one would usually find a Philips head screw are very deep and whatever the screw head shape is, it is not a philips.  looking with a flashlight shows a shape similar to what an allen wrench would handle but the hole is too deep to reach it with an allen wrench.

i never knew the compressor would need oil and have no manual for it. do not know where i would put oil or what kind to use.  i know i should call sears and ask them but the computer was down until a little while ago and it is now almost 11pm.  phone depends on computer.

does anyone use this kind of compressor and know what i might do on a sunday morning to make it work?  last firing date is wednesday, should i just relax, make more glazes and tackle it on Monday?

i have heard the word relax but do not understand how to do it.

Relax and plan on filling it with oil on Monday

Most compressors run on oil unless you have an oiless one.

You should not have to take any covers off-there may be a viewing window or plastic plug dipstick-Find your manual online if you do not have one. Relax and get back to work.

PS do not run it with low oil.

Relax.  Oh yeah, easy word to say, so difficult to do.  I had a neck problem and went to the physio.  She got me to lay on a bed, with my head off the edge and her holding my head.  Relax, she said.  About 20 times.  Eventually I chilled enough for her to fix my neck.

So, relaxing has a lot to do with trust.  If you trust that it will all be OK in the end, you can relax.  Find a manual, get the phone number ready for Monday, grab a glass of wine/water/tea and sit and watch the clouds wizz by!

I hope you get it fixed/

thank you all for your concern.  i know it was a panic post.  your suggestions were excellent, i am watching the diamonds dancing in the Potomac river right now, drinking a cherry coke, eating a chocolate covered donut and wondering what to price the fabulous things i took out of the kiln on friday.  red iron oxide is awful to clean up but these pots are spectacular!

part of the panic was caused by my stupidity. i tried to use Gimp for photos, as suggested, but i think i now need to have someone remove all the things that happened when i did it.  does anyone else get advertisements appearing suddenly covering the screen?  i never have before.  and now something called taplika search has appeared and a message from Norton says i have a thing called pccleaner that can/is/might cause problems.  and now, this minute some kind of sound is coming out of the pc and going away within a second. and what is a rapid media converter?

life was not as hard when all you had to do was conk a mammoth on the head and cook it.

Oldlady

heres the link for your manual(all manuals)

http://www.devap.com/manuals_splash.asp

or a sesars link here

http://powertool.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/devilbiss/devilbiss_air_compressor_product_list.html

You may have an oiless machine-you will need your model #

those recessed screw heads may be torx head-not allen-they have 5 points if I recall not 4.

I doubt the cover needs to come off to add oil.

{the holes where one would usually find a Philips head screw are very deep and whatever the screw head shape is, it is not a philips.  looking with a flashlight shows a shape similar to what an allen wrench would handle but the hole is too deep to reach it with an allen wrench}.

Something doesn't sound right, even if you turn the allen wrench around and use the long end its too short? It could be a torx bit like Mark said but i've never seen one that's deep. Are you sure it's not a pop rivet that your not supposed to remove? It just seems that if it's a location that your supposed to have access to for servicing it shouldn't be difficult.

I wish I could help more!  Dale

"an unhandled exception occurred when "  opening this website is what i understood from the message on the screen when i tried the first link.

i tried the second link and cannot get past the first page.  my model number is IRSFAC 28-2   the serial number is 2002141706 and the date of manufacture is 07-27-00.

i have looked at every part of the machine and there is nothing about oil.

i am going to load it into the car and take it to Home Depot to get one of those torx thingies.

if i have killed it i will get a new one.  this one has done a great job since 2002.

thank you, dale, yes i tried both ends.

Sorry about the bad links

Since devilbiss makes about 10,000 different models the web info on your model is sketchy at best.

Back to finding your manual-any chance?

also the oil plug maybe plastic-look for a drian plug on bottom(not on air tank but on commressor unit) as it will have one if it contains oil.

Looks like SAV 30 wieght is the right oil as well if you have an oil unit.

This is where one photo is worth 1,000 words.

I wish I could help you with your compressor ... I can't. But I can help you with the computer issue because I've done something similar before and I learned how to get out of it.

It sounds like you may have downloaded Gimp from a disreputable site. Run an antivirus like AVG to get rid of all the unwanted adware and spyware. http://www.avg.com/us-en/homepage

If you want more specific help, message me and I can walk you through it. Wishing you all the best with your compressor. I would love to see photos of your work when it's all done. :)

good news.   i took the compressor back to sears, it is a tiny store and i had low expectations.  they found a compressor online similar to mine, the model number was almost right and they printed out two diagrams of the machine and it has a note that it is oil free.   so.   nowhere to put oil.  no way inside.

i bought a new one, 10 gallon, with a hose, and 3 accessories,(don't know what) for $181.22 including tax.  about what the old one was in 2002.  it will be in reserve because i plan to turn on the old one and run it until it burns up.  not even taking the new one out of the car.       yet.

not only was it a good experience but the lady behind the desk is a computer expert and will graduate from shepherd university soon.  she is coming out to show me how to post pictures!   and maybe set up a website!!!   win, win!!! :D

good news, mark, there is a window to check the oil level and a place to add it.   :(   i forgot to buy any of the oil, though.

Oldlady - you really made me laugh with the mammoth.

And what good news about your new computer expert.  Let her fix everything, then ask her to explain gently how you can post pictures.  When teaching people with computers different to mine I often wizz around and work out what I need to do, then slow down and teach gently.  So if she wizzes, stay calm and remember that funny word.... relax......

We're all holding our breath and keeping our fingers crossed for you.

thanks chilly,

well, the old faithful compressor did two hours more work today and then died.  well, i did two hours work and then went in to lunch.  came out an hour later and found no pressure.  poor old thing. :(

now i have to set up the new one.  i just noticed that it is only one horsepower, the old one was 2.  will that matter very much?????  i am calling sears, this one has the craftsman brand name on it.  getting it out of the box with all that styrofoam around it will be a chore.

all is well.  i talked to a technician at a local electric motor repair shop and he reassured me that the one horsepower motor will do what i want.  now to unpack it and set it up. :D  WOOT!

oh, mark, oil comes with it. and some strange thing that expands and looks like dryer vent hose.   ????

Read all instructions! Not coming from a patronising person just one who is still learning that the instruction book serves a purpose, even if it is just to clarify that English comes in many forms, same words in sentence.......but.

i agree, reading the instructions is key.   mark, there were several notes about putting oil in before turning the machine on.  one of them was a band of yellow with big black letters to put oil in before plugging in the cord.  this was taped around the 3 prongs on the electrical cord.   i put the oil in before i did anything else.  the other ones were around the oil cover and a big one loose in the box.

seems to work fine, hope it lasts like the original one.
