Rebekah Krieger
Can someone suggest a good pyrometer for raku that is not going to break the bank? Thanks! (also some decent gloves?) Links would be helpful if possible
Guest JBaymore
Define "break the bank"? I am very partial to Omega Engineering equipment. Lots of options and generally better quality (industrial market supplier). For raku....... you really don't need much precise accuracy for most of the very primitive design kilns used. The variations in the chamber are huge... so the pyrometer reading is not very representative of the whole chamber. It is a "guideline". The good news is that a Type K thermocouple is perfect for those temps. http://www.omega.com/ best, ..................john
neilestrick
For raku, I have found that cheap pyrometers work fine. While they are not necessarily totally accurate, they are repeatable. You just need to figure out how hot on the pyrometer you want to go by watching the glazes melt in the first load, then fire to that same reading each time. Euclid's has some cheap ones that work well.
Marc McMillan
If doing saggar might I recommend one that can be positioned so you can see the readout from a distance. If you can, you want to stay away from the gasses of Ferric chloride etc. I always wear a respirator, but staying a distance away and monitoring the progress is easier to enjoy a frosty beverage.
