Making Clay

Does anyone make their own clay? I'm currently working with a woman who is trying to get her mothers' pottery studio up and running again and she has makes her own clay. She seems to think that it's the water that is causing the problems. However, she recently could not get one of the key ingredients however, she was told that what she order was the same thing chemically. Does anyone have suggestions or advice on whom I could speak to and books that I should read?

More info definitely. I think unless you have really unusual well water that you're working with (really high sulfur or iron content in levels that render it not drinkable) it's not too likely to be your water. But if it is the case, make a small 1-2 kg batch of the clay with rainwater or snowmelt to test.

I do know a couple of people that use rainwater to mix clay and glazes, but it's more for a lack of handy plumbing than any defects in municipal tap water.
