I hope the next challenge will avoid too specific a goal.  I participated in a couple, but I just wasn't interested enough to devote time to a specific form that was narrowly defined.  And at the moment, not interested in tile, though I've made quite a few over the years.

I tend to find the more nebulously defined challenges more thought provoking.

Still, my suggestion is the albarello, or medicine jar.  It's a simple form, but can take many shapes and if we're not sticklers for authenticity, many decorative approaches.

I reached my quota of "likes" on the first page! :(

I am a newbie here, but I really like the idea of the community challenge. Although everyone might not participate for various reasons, it is inspiring to think about the challenge and can influence the direction you are going. Isn't that what community does? Thank you for working on this!

How about things that inspire people - in form or function, with or without words.

Most obvious would be a cross or a shot glass (), but go beyond that?

I'd like to see people choose one form ... Bowl, mug, vase, container, casserole ... And execute the form several times using different techniques ... Throwing, coiling, soft slab building, firm slab building, slump molds, hump mods, pinching, free form ... Whatever. Just test how many ways you can get to where you are going.

Or even using the same technique/process in different ways to arrive at the same form. Ex. bowl thrown upside down and right side up, thrown with texture applied before shaping, thrown with texture after shaping, Thrown with double walls, thrown with colored combinations of clay, Thrown in multiple parts, Other variations I am sure are possible.

best,

Pres

My idea is to start this back up again.. Did the community challenge stop while I was away? It was one of the reasons I returned.

Beer, Pots, Design, Golf.. not necessarily in that order..

Current challenge is a little empty, obviously missed the mark with that idea.

New one will be starting in December, I always add the link to the newest thread in my signature.

Hmmmm, I'm guilty as charged.  Couldn't think of a design, and for home use I like the grinders.

Guilty also ... never hit on an inspiring design and then just lost focus in the midst of many other attention-grabbers in the studio & the not-studio (daily life). I could keep going with the excuses, but basically just wimped out & dropped the ball.

How about something that doesn't require a huge commitment of time...like a sketch problem:

Cube-o-Rama

  • Take enough clay to make a 1" cube (2.54 cm)...and take a picture
  • Make something functional/whimsical from the cube
  • Take progress pictures and share
  • Post final project with an appropriate cubical-functional-whimsical title
  • Send 25 cents to my PayPal account

OK...everything except that last bullet-point :)

Still massaging the sketch problem concept:

Not-a-Handle Handle

From a 1 to 2 lb clump of well-wedged (or pugged) clay:

  • Pull a very long handle
  • Make it a little longer...maybe 18" to 24"
  • Without breaking or cutting into sections...
  • Create a form that is NOT a handle.
  • Give your creation a sniglet-like title

Joel and everybody: did the Community Challenge stop? I never saw the December one... Joel, are you demoralized?

I would love to awaken the Challenge again. What do you all think? Joel, would you try once more? You did an outstanding job so far!

I really enjoyed doing the challenges but I have stopped running any. I felt they had run their course as participation was dwindling and my ideas were not bringing people in. I had fun trying it out and thank you to everybody who joined in but don't feel bad if you didn't.

Anybody is more than welcome to take up the community challenge torch and continue.

Joel: I can understand your frustration. At one point too I had to stay out for 2 challenges because of lack of time and then the hand surgeries. But I think it sad that the Community Challenge stopped. Maybe Mistfit wants to take over?

I'm a better organiser than I am a potter.  If no-one else wants to take this on, I will.
