Where Does Used Ceramics Equipment Go?

I have searched everywhere for used extruders, slab rollers, old clay, mixers, basically old equipment....I'm coming up empty. Is there a magical locale where all the pro's and profs post their stuff? I have searched Craig's and only find kilns and wheels...both I have and scored on Craig's...I've tried bribing my old art department with baked goods to part ways with their unused old wares but to no avail-all on diets I bet...does it all go to the dump or what??? Ebay has nothing!

I need an extruder now!I can't afford a 200$ plus gadget...any suggestions? Anybody know of a little niche of artists in Orange county,ca where I can get some input...I feel like a baby in ceramics...yet I swear I went to college for this kind of thing about 10 years ago.

Even used extruders and slab roller are not cheap. I did manage to get my brent wheel for $200 off craigslist some years ago and just recently got an extruder for $150 also off craigslist. I have seen slab rollers on my local craigslist too but the prices are too dear still so my trusty rolling pin has to make do.

also on CL make sure your searches are picking everything you're interested in. For example to see all the wheels I find I have to search "potters wheel" and "pottery wheel". also use the online tools that search across CL in multiple areas to make sure there is not one fairly close by.

good luck!

Ooooooooooooo state government surplus....you just made my month! I love surplus! I am going to check out the potterbarter when my kids are napping...thanks so much everyone!I saw a rolling pin slab roller with guides built in and one that had different levels of wood wedges to use instead...but oh the effort and free space needed... I would love to figure out how to search Craig's list regionally instead of just my small area, didn't know that was possible...

I really want a handle extruder, I'm bored with pulled handles for all the mugs I am making and I can make my own custom inserts...I just don't have time to make a whole extruder.

make one from a tool sold at hardware stores, HD, lowes etc, a caulking gun.  there is a utube on it as well.  there is a beautiful slab roller made in the UK on utube, i LOVE it's simplicity!  look for a black painted one made by someone with two names, Jerry and ??

you can buy one of the caulking gun types from a clay supplier for about $40 if you want.

I know just which one you're talking about, and if memory serves me, it's somewhere in the video archives here, around about page #11, or maybe it was page #13? Just look around in that vicinity and you should be able to find it. It uses 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe, pvc test caps and the cheapest calk gun you can get at HD.

I've rounded up all of the requisite materials to make mine. Now I just need the time to sit down, drill the test caps to make the extrusion shapes I want and put it all together. Too bad one can't buy time as easily as materials!

Govdeal and publicsurplus are two awesome sight.  There is constantly ceramic-related items posted (wheels, kilns, etc.)  Sadly, most of it isn't in my area.  A TON of stuff from Florida.

There is indeed a homemade clay extruder video around here.  It is super cheap to make.  Sadly, I want to make one form my classroom, but the mounting shown in the video, wouldn't work for my class.  Still a great idea.

Jerry and John.  They made a few and sold them all, don't have any more in stock, may/may not be making any more.

Sounds like a good idea, also you can buy empty tubes to go into a caulking gun - from a DY place, should be much cheaper than from a clay supplier.

I knew if I got off of my lazy butt and went looking, I'd find it! Here's the video on how to make your own hand held extruder. Gotta love this one! Entertaining too.

ok, nobody miss this, it is great.  you too can make a slab roller if you have any metal working skills or know someone who does.    www,pottersbits.co.uk  *  is what i found when i went to youtube and entered "Jerry and John slabroller UK."   thanks, chilly.   the design for the adjustment is stellar.  the folding over the top canvas which is attatched to the board is the same technique used in Bailey's best slabroller.

to be completely wonderful, try the addition of two printers blankets instead of the wrinkled cloth they use.  printers blankets are used in offset printing. printers  use the rubber side.  once they get nasty from ink on the rubber side they dispose of them.  you want the other side, it is a very fine cloth surface like a man's dress shirt.  much better than canvas because it does not need as much scraping to smooth the surface. the blanket will be covered with ink and you will have to clean it off when you get it.

stiffer ones are best, the thinner ones are more flexible and might stick a little  going into the rollers if you use them with a Northstar slab roller.   finding a printer who throws them away is as simple as looking up printers, offset, and calling them to ask, also ask what chemical cleans off the ink.  some are very large and can be cut to fit your situation with a simple razor knife.  i have used mine for at least 5 years and they are as good as the first day.  best part is that you can hose the cloth surface off and dry them overnight.  NO AWFUL TOXIC DUST LIKE USED CANVAS.

* this is not a mistake, it is really .co and not .com

I'd like to tell you about The Mighty Mat that I purchased last spring.  (It is a cleaned up printers blanket.)  I use this item every time I touch clay.  It is easy to clean, sharp tools won't cut it, the cloth side is perfect to roll clay on (with no texture) and I can (finally) roll a beautiful, even coil using the blue side.  Check it out at www.themightymat.com  Considering what we pay for clay "tools", this purchase is worth every cent.  BTW, the seller is trustworthy.  He FedExed the order as soon as he received my check and didn't cash my check until I let him know that I had received the order.  If you would prefer to use a brick and mortar store, contact Atlanta Clay.

I don’t know if anyone’s interested but I have a 10 ft.³ alpine kiln 6 foot long Brent slab roller extruder mixers bats a lot of glaze and much more . I’m looking to move it quickly and cheap – all this equipment is in need of work. It has been non-operative for many years. My injuries are forcing me to let go of this equipment . In the 80s and 90s it was a functioning potter studio. I believe with the right person life can come back to this equipment
