After a three page discussion, with 50+ comments, there are no secrets in the community. I thought we once agreed to stop being sarcastic here? I don't think that was meant to be sarcasm. TJR. (I personally probably should have a membership) The Potter's Council is a body largely (but not exclusively) for professional development. There are a number of Forum members who are not professionals, or would not get sufficient value out of a membership. $52 a year is a lot of money to participate in a fun challenge. Not at ALL. We have the survey data. The VAST majority of Potters Council members are avocational and hobby potters. It seems that a lot of them find value in their membership...... our annual retention rate is very high for such membership organizations... and iof I am remembering correctly from the last Board meeting...... that percentage is increasing. If you subscribe to Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated, and but a book or DVD (depending on which one) a year.... your membership is basically free due to the discounts. For a lot of folks that alone is the "deal maker". And the shipping benefits for example could extend outside of solely the "business"...... so if you send of packages for something like Christmas..... the discount there applies as well. Look into the info on the Council...... you may find it is not what you think it is. The "Challenge" being discussed here has nothing to do with the Potters Council. It is something that is being proposed, organized, and developed by the participants involved in posting on the Ceramic Arts Daily forums. The CAD forums are NOT the "Potters Council". The forum has moderators who volunteer as well. I think a possible separate topic for a monthly challenge could be done but it would need a moderator (High Bridge) And who knows what kind of spam you'd get posting. I just try to look at all sides. If this is a challenge for Forum members, then it should be here, no? The American Ceramics Society hosts this forum for us. Maybe we could ask an administrator if this would be a possibility.It could be archived quarterly for reference and started anew for the next quarter challenge. If any spam appears within challenge threads, we mods will zap it as usual. But otherwise the Challenge will be run entirely by users. That said, it's really not the role of the forum admins or moderators to host such a contest. It does not fall within the mission and purpose of this forum, which is to maintain an open forum for dialog and the exchange of knowledge—etc., etc., etc., blah, blah, blah—there are more reasons but I'll stop there. The ONLY thing I mean by this is that we would not start, host, or run it as admins or mods. We will not prevent a user or users from proceeding with it using current forum functionality (though the forum software is really not set up to implement contests or voting in some of the ways being discussed here). So, one thing that might work to organize the images is to ask folks to post images to their own galleries with the images titled with a specific hashtag, so that one could search the galleries for that hashtag and see all of the images together. The other option would be to simply ask users to add images to posts within the topic for that particular challenge (keeping in mind that you cannot limit posts in a given topic to only those you want to see in there). The polling function in a topic has an option for up to 20 answer choices, and the topic poster would need to populate those, but that means only 20 images could be considered for voting. So, it's possible someone could launch the project (start a topic), and tell people to post images using either method described above, and then open the voting through the topic polling function, but it would be limited to 20 "finalists" or 20 participants to begin with. I don't like the idea of more than 20 entering and having to pick who goes in the poll. The hash tag could be a good idea. For the main challenge thread I am not looking for one entry after another, the dialogue will be interesting. After the three months I would post a final entries thread so you can see all entries at once. This is the only thing that will need to be hosted off site. I really like using google docs so could make up a pdf of all entries and link. That would be the only part needed to be found off the forum and I feel google docs will be around for a long time so it could in theory be viewed 10 years after being posted. Chantay Posted January 22, 2015 Report Share Posted January 22, 2015 I didn't think of the "like" buttons as I hardly ever use them. I think using the like button instead of voting is a great idea. As long as people remember there are people like me who forget to use them. so, the thread will begin February 1, and High Water will start it and post what the challenge will be?? If we post an image in our own gallery, can a link to it be added within a posting? It would be nice if we had a group gallery just for the challenge. I agree with Benzine that the first should be something like self portrait or similar. You can then use any techniques to create a piece. Linking the images shouldn't take that long, I worked out how you can find the link for the posted attachment and post it as an image link. As long as the user keeps it uploaded and the link to the image stays the same then they shouldn't disappear. And with web sites like https://tagboard.com/ one could have a URL to send everyone/anyone who wanted their image(s) included and for people to see them. We used it here at Belmont most recently to aggregate text and image posts to celebrate our head basketball coach's 700th career win.
