Judith B
I know it is an odd question, but I am going to Japan (Tokyo and the Kansai area) soon and I would love to bring back some trimming tools. Do you know any pottery supply store over there? Thank you!
Guest JBaymore
Congratulations on the trip. Enjoy. In Tokyo itself.... easy one for a tourist to find is "Tokyu Hands" ... one store in Shibuya and one in Shinjuku. http://shinjuku.tokyu-hands.co.jp/en/ http://shibuya.tokyu-hands.co.jp/en/ They have all manner of neat stuff... and they have a pottery section. You'll likely find what you are looking for there. If you have the time....... get to Mashiko-machi. It is possible as a LONG day trip from Tokyo. Better to stay one night at the minimum. Shinkansen from Tokyo to Utsunomiya. Bus from there to Mashiko. Utsunomiya station has an information stand that can get you to the right bus (they typically speak a little English). Announcements for Mashiko are on the bus in English. There is an all train route to Mashiko... but the changes can be a bit difficult unless you speak a bit of Japanese. (Perticularly due to a potential train split where some cars go to a different place..... and you have to be in the right section of the train. ..and they do NOT announce that in English.) 日本語ãŒè©±ã›ã¾ã™ã‹ã€‚ In Mashiko, near the "Potters Square" (on the oppoosite side of the street) is the Mashiko Kumiai ... the town's ceramics cooperative store. Lots of tools and raw materials there. best, .........................john

whiteshirts
I've just this week returned from both Tokyo and Kyoto, and had the same question. I went to Tokyo hands and all they had were a few small tools for working with Sculpey clay; your average Blick art store has more. I spoke with one gallery owner who also is a potter, who said you need to go to Shigaraki (a wonderful trip all by itself) in order to get tools. This fellow has lived and worked in Kyoto for 30 years, so he must know.
Guest JBaymore
Well... that is sad to hear about Tokyu Hands! I was last there in 2012... and they still had SOME decent stuff. Guess you are maybe back to the Mashiko potential out of Tokyo. The Kumiai is WELL stocked with tools. Whiteshirts... is the small train to Shigaraki out of Kyoto back running again yet? (was closed for a couple of years) best, ...................john
Judith B
Is Shigaraki far from Tokyo? I couldn't find it on a map. Thanks for the infos about Tokyo Hands though! And have you ever been to Sekaido in Tokyo? Apparently it is a huge art supply store with a floor specificaly for fine art supplies and sculpture. Would they have any pottery supplies as well?
GJPagano
Ship afaik is not far from Kyoto. About an hour or so. It's on some ceramic day tours from Kyoto, so if you have a rail pass, it shouldn't be a costly or an extremely long trip.
Guest JBaymore
It would be far easier for you to get to Mashiko from Tokyo than to get to Shigaraki. You'd first have to get down to the Kyoto area. If you are already in Kyoto, Shigaraki is not that difficult...... although the small train to there that makes the easy connect from Kyoto Eki was being repaired last I knew. best, .......................john
