ChenowethArts
As long as I have been working in clay and having fired kilns more times than I want to imagine, I have never had a Kiln Opening event/party. I have seen announcements, blog posts, and Facebook pages that included references to these events...and I really do get the excitement of that first view of glazed work when the kiln is first opened. So, what are you doing (or have seen) that makes for a great kiln opening event? -Paul
Denice
I guess it depends on the people that are attending, If it's students they don't need anything, the high from the excitement of unloading the kiln is enough. If customers are attending maybe some wine and cheese and a little music. When I was in college thefts were so high the professors were grading work in the greenware stage. They would announce when kilns were being unloaded and if you wanted get yours you would show up. As the work was pulled out of the kiln discussions on the glazes, firing process and weight of the pieces would start. I went to them even when I didn't have any work in the firing. Chris Campbell
They are the same as a studio/home sale. Good food, good music, beer and wine, fast check out procedure. If you are wise you open the kiln ahead of time, reload it with terrific work and close it again!
ChenowethArts
Oh @Chris Campbell... who would do such a thing *snicker*!?!? (I was actually wondering what others might think of doing the same thing)...but it is YOUR show after all and I've never seen an announcement that included "be the first people to ever view the new work coming from the kiln".Soooo... if one has a bunch of new work that no one has ever seen, it is possible to load it all into a kiln and announce a kiln opening party, right? I hear someone in the back saying, "Why go to that much trouble...just call it a Studio Tour". -Paul
Chris Campbell
There is nothing in the phrase "Kiln Opening" to limit when you closed the kiln, or why you closed it. It would be totally different if you were taking a photo of your perfect 'salted' kiln load and claimed it was a random load.
Joseph Fireborn
What Chris said is just smart business. It would be insane to invite a bunch of people over and have a bad firing and all the pieces are terrible. The exciting thing is for non potters to see the kiln opening and seeing all the pieces coming out and being a part of that. I would do exactly what Chris said.
