jbander
This is for a glaze recipe that I use in Oxidation at cone 8 . The glaze is called G8, It's a beautiful red glaze that blushes to a green tint with the added copper where it is thicker. I think it is a Val Cushing glaze What I can read of the soaked pages is Volcanic ash 41.3 Bers Bor 23.1 3134 9.7 EPK 7.7 lithium c 1.2 Dolemite 4.5 whiting 1.4 flint 10.5 I believe these top ones are correct But these are just blurred out Cop c ? RIO ? Tin Ox ? can anyone fill in the ? on Cop C and RIO and Tin Ox Any help would be really appreciated . It's crunch time for me , so I don't have the needed time to test it out. Although I might have to.
High Bridge Pottery
Crunch time and untested glazes.... Bad idea. Hopefully someone here will know what recipe you are looking for. Not sure what RIO is? I thought that was just the name for fluxes.

Tin oxide 4.5 Ayjay This looks like it, Is it a Val Cushing glaze and was I right in calling it G8 and does the rest of the glaze correlate with the glaze your drawing these numbers from. You saved me lots of time, thank you. I would have never guessed that the RIO would be just .9 Not for how red this Iron red glaze is.

You saved me lots of time, thank you. I would have never guessed that the RIO would be just .9 Not for how red this Iron red glaze is. It's GA 8. I can't say if it's a Val Cushing glaze or not, it was produced by a group working together according to the book. (Big Clou in Big Lou's link) 0.7 RIO is what the book says, it wasn't red at all for me, if i made it again I was going to increase it.
jbander
Ahjay Thanks for the information .I'm having that problem right now with color intensity . I believe it is the volcanic ash you have, thats the problem . The Volcanic ash I got from Continental clay in Mn worked at that level .9% it makes a great glaze. I just found a 25 lb box in over inventory here , It's from 50 years ago. I used .9% red Iron Ox and it is just a, not so nice, green. I did some glaze test added increased increments of Iron by just adding a pinch at a time to my 4% spray gun . And I have it close but I don't think it will be as nice, it seems to lean more to the brown /red. This is a remarkable glaze if you have the right volcanic ash. I'm guessing all volcanic ash's are not the same. I'm testing it for exact % right now I'll get back to you Thanks Jon
ayjay
This is a remarkable glaze if you have the right volcanic ash. I'm guessing all volcanic ash's are not the same. I had to use a substitute for the Volcanic Ash, (there are substitute suggestions in the book, which I followed). I quite like the look of the glaze and will make a larger batch next time, but there was very little red, a few speckles showing through the green was what I had. I'll take a harder look at my substitute and increase the RIO a little next time
jbander
Here it is thin without the green flash from the copper. With the right volcanic ash .with just .9% iron. It's a amazing glaze

It's a amazing glazecup1.JPG ...........and very similar to what I get with a Richard Busch glaze I use called Nutmeg. This (below) has about 25% satin white mixed in (and a stray nail - ignore that!) but used neat it is very similar to your pic. I'm off to compare the recipes now and try and learn something.
