I am in the process of renovating a building for my studio.  I am using a room in the basement for my electric kilns.  There is a good sized window that is boarded up in that room.  I have a kiln vent for one of my kilns, but I thought it might be beneficial to ventilate the room by installing some sort of exhaust fan in the window space.  My contractor is suggesting an attic vent.  This sounds like overkill and might be too noisy.  Any suggestions based experience?  Thanks!

simplest solution is passive.  See simon leach video's.  Granted he has a "proper" chimney that he can simply place a vent over and duct the hot air out via natural draft.     If you had a kiln vent that could be extended to run outside.

Another option is 6" duct booster.  simply run 6" rigid duct out the window and include one of these  ~$30

That VenTEch is a lot cheaper than the X2d. Is it any good?

And further to Magnolia Mud's comment, make sure the exhaust outlet and the source of incoming replacement air are on different walls of the room. If you are using a window as the source of makeup air and the vent outlet is near it, you will just suck the stinky air back in through the window.
