enbarro
Any ideas on how to formulate a black opaque gloss glaze that will hold layers of other opaque glazes on top without boiling over? When I uses store bought black glazes I get solid clean overglaze lines when fired. When I use stain or a mix of oxides so far the black boils over the glazes on top. I fire cone 03 red clay. Any ideas of what am I missing? Thanks.
Mark C.
Most blacks are just a oversaturation of colorants. My cone 10 black will hold other glazes but the colorants want to bled thru them all. How about putting the other glaze on 1st wax it over and apply black next to it? enbarro
Thanks Mark, hadn't thought of that, it will be interesting to try. I'll probably get a different effect. I'm thinking of adding zircopax...
neilestrick
If you opacify the top glaze it will help keep the black from coming through. This assumes that the glazes are stiff enough that they won't just run and bleed into each other.
enbarro
Thanks Neil, Some of the glazes on top glazes have 12% zircopax and pretty stiff. Also they layer fine over commercial blacks. Thats why I think the problem are the recipes I've tried.
neilestrick
You can always stiffen up a glaze by increasing the alumina a bit.
