Babs
I was advise by an old potter to put a rock on it, and I did till the kiln died of old age many years later. Wouldn't mess with ceramic fibre like that Awful stuff to breathe in.
bciskepottery
Wondering if something like this is preferable to loose fiber: http://thermal-industrial-ceramic-products.thermalproductsco.com/viewitems/thermal-products-textiles--1041/fiberfrax-round-braid You could remove the rope between firings and not have to mess with plastic to protect your wares from contamination. Rope is used to seal kiln doors; could easily be adapted for a top loading kiln. Over time, that fiber gasket is going to become brittle and create more hassles than it is worth. This is what wood stove doors use I suggested it to Markco as I think its more stable as well-You can buy it at a good stove shop(wood stove)
neilestrick
You shouldn't need to mess with any fiber system on a top loading kiln if everything is set up properly.

I think the rope is a better alternative for a conversion kiln firing gas (ala Simon in video) than fiber blanket with plastic to protect while loading.
