jammy43
I'm looking at various cone 6 clay recipes and have the question of makes a porcelain 'porcelain' vs stoneware. I had thought it was the addition of a stoneware clay but then i came across the following recipes from val Cushing, both are so similar with the only major difference i see being kaolin (Tile 6) vs ball clay (C&C). Category White Porcelain Throwing Source Cushing's Handbook (#2 on p.37) Name VC Translucent White Cone 6 Note Translucent white vitreous body Recipe Grolleg 25 Tile 6 25 Kona F-4 28 Frit 3124 12 Flint 10 Macaloid 2 Category White Stoneware Throwing Source Cushing's Handbook (#2 p.37) Name VC Vitreous White Cone 6 Note White, very strong body Recipe Grolleg 25 C&C 25 Kona F-4 30 Frit 3124 4 Flint 16 Macaloid 2 ps. I found this info on Alfred's universtity website, although i see they both reference the same recipe on the same page. I'm not familiar with Val's book its self to know if this is just a typo
Min
If you ask 10 different potters this question you'll probably get 11 answers. In my books, if you have ball clay in a body it is not porcelain. PS, I've used the first recipe you posted, it is very nice albeit very expensive to make. In his book the first you posted is #1 on page 37, the second is #
neilestrick
If it's got ball clay, it's not porcelain. Nor is it porcelain-like. Adding ball clay ruins everything that makes porcelain feel so wonderful. So if you want something that's similar to B-Mix or other white stoneware bodies, those recipes will be good, and there's nothing wrong with that. I'd go with the C&C body, because C&C is awesome stuff and it will likely be more workable than the Tile 6 body. But if you want porcelain, then find a recipe that doesn't have ball clay.
