Testing Picture

Recommended Posts

Are you resizing the picture or is that what your camera is giving you? When I click the picture it doesn't even load in the popup. I can see it but not in the popup. It just keeps loading forever.

+1

I find the photo's straight out of the camera are too large to post.  Despite having lots of fancy/expensive software on my desktop computer, I find the easiest way to reduce the photo size on my laptop (before posting them here) is to e-mail them to myself.  I use Outlook to manage my e-mails, and when I attach photos it offers to reduce them for me.  I like software that is helpful.........

I don't know if that will help your hatred of computers or not............

That is some good advice Chilly. Fancy software can only do what you tell it to do.

I prefer a little more control resizing but in the end it probably doesn't make much difference to the end viewer. I just like to get as close to the 500kb limit as possible and slide a few dials when saving my jpegs. There can be a big difference in file size between the same image, one saved high quality and one saved low quality.

I generally put in 712 pixels for the larger of the two width and high values and most software will scale the image proportionally by default. This gives a fairly full screen image without going over 1024 pixels which some people could still be using as their maximum screen resolution. Then again it all depends on how big I want the image to be viewed.

I also go up in powers of 2. A few years ago I was told this was good practise, something to do with computer memory working that way. It probably makes no difference other than making me feel better about it.

I don't quite understand when you say "they always want you to do the same thing" What things are these?

Computers can be a pain ...

I downloaded a copy of your image, which seems to be only 100x76 pixels, and followed the

advice on How do I attach an image in the Our Most Frequently Asked Questions

postings in the Forum FAQ & Help Topics forum.

After you have your image resized, go to the bottom of your post and click More Reply Options,

then to Attach Files at the bottom of the page. Click Choose File button. Navigate to your photo

on your computer. Choose the file and click the Attach This File button. You will see a small thumbnail

of your image on the left and an Add to Post button on your right. Click the Add to Post button.

Note that the Choose file button now seems to be called Browse

... following this procedure gave

post-34897-0-64332000-1409441503.jpg

Which does include a "thumbnail" of your picture in the posting, which does open-up to "full-size" when

you click on it. Unfortunately the full-size image is only 100x76 pixels so it doesn't really change size

Regards, Peter

PS Tried the same procedure with a picture from another thread, as a check on my logic.

post-34897-0-06685200-1409441963_thumb.jpg

Seems to be OK. The Image as downloaded was 640x477 pixels, and expands nicely.

Ah Oldlady, were you using that weird image box at the top that asks you to put in an image url? I have not really been able to figure that button out or at least the few times I tried it didn't seem to work.

It works fine if your pics are stored at Photobucket or Imageshack, (or any similar services), it's no use if the pic is on your own device, for those you need the gizmos below the reply box.

I am pretty computer savvy and I cannot get my avatar photo to post at all on this site. I use Picasa and no matter how I crop the image it still seems to be too big.

I have lost many photos on dead computers. I highly recommend storing your photos on an external hard drive. The one I have now is 150 GB and seven years ago cost probably $200 but the prices have gone down considerably. I just saw a 1TB drive for $65 on eBay.

Your avatar needs to be under 50kb I think. Mine is 300 by 300 pixels.

It is difficult to realize some times that a computer image can be made up of 3 size components, especially if you are using inches or mm as your dimensional measurements. Many people think that an image that is 2"X2" is quite small. However that is not the case if the image has a density of 300 dpi. So when we speak of image size pixels is the best component to figure  size for posting on line. When printing an image with your printer, you would want the image in standard or metric, and the image density at 180 dpi or more. Most of the time for print I use 300dpi.

When saving images for archival purposes if they are important, I save images as .tif with no compression. This because jpeg loses information every time you edit it. In this manner, if I want to post an image on line, I pull up the .tif edit it with cropping and sizing, contrast changes or others and then save it as a jpeg for on line posting.

best,

Pres

I'm a Linux guy, so I use Gimp, an image manipulation program that's free and almost as powerful as Photoshop.  There are also versions for Windows and Mac.  Resizing images for the web couldn't be easier, using Gimp.  You open the image in the program, click on Scale Image, type in a new width (say, 500 pixels), the image is resized, and you save it.  I usually save it under a new name, so as to leave the original image unchanged.  You also have the option of cropping or otherwise tweaking the image.

When uploading to a forum thread, I've found it easier to hit the "More Reply Options" button to get the "Attach Files" option.  This has a button called "Choose Files" which allows you to pick the image you want to attach to your post from the file stored on your machine.

The image below had a slight rotation problem corrected, was cropped, and resized, all in about a minute.

It's a little hard to tell folks how to do this, but easy to show.  I'd guess there's a kid in your  neighborhood who could set this up for you and show you how to do it in just a few minutes.

I use the Gimp for most of my editing any more. I have taught Photoshop, and used Corel Paint. However, pricing on Photoshop got to be too extreme, and Corel is not as robust.  Gimp has a great bit of support, and there are several books out on it. Gimp for Photographers is one that comes to mind.

Yes, editing a photo in Gimp is pretty quick, and easy once you get used to the interface.

If people are daunted by photo editing software, powerful is not always better. If you want an intuitive interface that you can figure out by just "poking" at it, I recommend PicMonkey. It's designed to edit photos specifically for online use. The base version is free, and has enough capability to adjust colour, brightness and size of image. It's easy to put your images where you want them to be saved in your computer, and has an easy way of resizing photos. It also has some good video tutorials.

I also like that after figuring it out, it's easier to expand your knowledge to more powerful software.

unfortunately, there are no kids in my neighborhood.  i have many neighbors who are only here on the weekends and do not want to waste their few hours here showing some old lady how to post pictures.

what is this Gimp thing?  do i enter the name Gimp in the url line and follow instructions?  maybe after the sale on mothers day.  have many, many pots to glaze and fire before next friday.

This is from the FAQ page

How do I attach an image?

First, you might need to resize your image. The maximum files size for each post on this forum is 500kb. In Photoshop (or similar program) make sure your image is RGB, 72dpi, and we recommend under 600 pixels wide. Then go to File > Save for Web & Devices. You should see 4 versions of the image at differing levels of quality and file sizes. Choose the smallest file size possible without compromising your image quality. Then click Save.

After you have your image resized, go to the bottom of your post and click More Reply Options, then to Attach Files at the bottom of the page. Click Choose File button. Navigate to your photo on your computer. Choose the file and click the Attach This File button. You will see a small thumbnail of your image on the left and an Add to Post button on your right. Click the Add to Post button.

really and truly i've got that.  it is before posting to cad that i have a problem.  resizing after finding the picture is the problem!  finding the picture i want is the problem.  having pictures somewhere  where is the best place to put them and how do i do it is the problem.  it is the basic adding of pictures to the computer that is the problem.

it is the assumption that i already solved these problems and just want to know how to put them here that is the problem.  i really appreciate everyone who has tried to explain it to me.  if i could print out the instructions you send so i would have them to look at while following them, maybe it would work.  i am not really stupid, it is just so damn complicated to hear allthisstuffatonceand try to do it.

i will hire a student at the college in Shepherdstown after may 11.  all will be well.  you may be sorry you have unleashed the picture poster in me. B)

Organizing pictures-Tough, but can be made simpler if. I put all of the pictures I use for business in the Pictures sub section. First I RT click on the opened pictures folder where there is no folder-from the menu that pops down, I select "new", from the new list select folder. A new folder will appear, unnamed. Name this folder -say "Online Pics, or Forum Pics. Then whenever you download pics from you camera, or other drive, make certain they go into the new folder. When you have done that, take some time to name each pic, so that you don't have to search through numbers to find an image. Get used to doing this, and you will soon get the hang of it.

Renaming a pic is easy if you don't know how. Rt click again on the image you want to rename, towards the bottom of the pop up list is rename, select it, and rename the photo.

Hope this helps. . . a bit.

If you have any mac device-iphone ipad or icomputer-you can send yourself your photo (via e-mail) and you will have 3 choices in size-pick small and thats all you would have to do.Once you have it in a email drag it to desktop and then you add it to  CAD post.
