Wheel Wobble. How Much Wobble Is A Real Wobble?

Recommended Posts

I've just acquired a Leach wheel. On using it, it became obvious that the wheel head was not revolving around its centre.

I took the wheel head off and took a look at the shaft. This is what I saw:

Is this usual for a wheel? ...or should I learn to deal with it?

Any help in finding the cause of the problem would also be appreciated!

Unless the camera was moving, I held a paper next to the edge of the board. It was moving and not the shaft. I would go around the wheel and tighten everything possible. If the shaft is bent, you will nee to replace it. A machine shop should be able to make one for you. Or maybe whoever manufactured your wheel could replace it.

If your just getting started, it's a lot harder to throw on a crooked wheel. It's not impossible, just frustrating. Learning to deal with it when you start, may just lead to it setting in the corner collecting dust.

You could throw from the hump, or stick a batt to the top with clay to level out the wheel head.

This will not work if the bearings are shot, as it will tend to throw your work off center when you apply pressure to the clay.

I watched the video, that looks bent prety bad. You probably have a lot of wobble on a 14" wheel head. I'm guessing you need to replace the shaft or the bearings, Possibly both.

Good luck!

The gauge that took the original measurement was connected to the floor.

Unless the camera was moving

Of course! I took another measurement, this time with the gauge attached to the beam that holds the top bearing. No movement!

Mug, you're right. I am just getting started and was all too ready to blame the wheel!

Panic over. Thanks for your help.
