Fireplace Kiln?

Recommended Posts

Hi potters,

I spend most of my time firing bisque ware in a pit, barrel, beach or whatever I can find with a flame.

Sitting at home in the winter with the fireplace roaring had me thinking, has anyone fired ware in the fireplace?

If so please drop a note.

Thanks so much

Sharon

First, this should be in a category other than Potters Council, but...to answer you question :

you can probably fire small pieces to the same degree as an open pit firing. That is an above ground firing rather than a pit. This was an advancement over the "in the ground" pit firing because greater heat was attained but only by a constant stoking. So larger pieces won't be able to reach a satisfactory temperature in a fireplace, but you can have a little fun with small pieces at a low temperature.
