Quality Of Firing In Short Kiln Vs Tall

Recommended Posts

Well it looks like I will finally be ready to get a new L&L kiln within a month. I have decided that a kiln about 6.8 c.f. would work well for the amount and size of things I am producing. My feeling is that since I am over 60 the 28" wide x 18" tall would be good for my back as well as accommodate the occasional platter, etc.

There is also a 6.7 c.f. kiln that is 22.375" wide x 27" tall version. They both fit my price range.

My question is, in your experience, does the firing environment work as well in the shorter version or is the taller one going to have more up and down room for the magic to happen. I will be firing obviously oxidation and to ^6 and less.

The kiln will have a Vent-Sure System and the 3 inch bricks.

btw, you can't see me jumping up and down in excitement. I'm giving my self a headache with the happiness.

Congratulations. I think you should go visit one. I am 65 and I have a big oval. I use 2 cinderblocks to stand on to load it. The 18" kiln seems low to me. You could raise that height by putting it on cinderblocks. Go to a show room and feel what it is like to put a shelf into it. You could probably adjust the height for comfort for your back. The firing should be fine. That is a good company.

If you don't need the height, then go with the 28" wide by 18" tall. Your back will thank you. The wider diameter will give you more efficient loading space, too. Just remember that you're going to lose about 1.5" due to the shelf you'll put on the bottom. As for the firing, because your kiln will have zone control it won't matter how tall it is.

I'd be happy to give you pricing if you don't have a local L&L distributor that you're working with.
