An Old Brent Refurb

Recommended Posts

I just purchased an older Brent C for the right price. :)

It has a serial # of 7372 and is a 1/2 hp, non-reversable control.

Inside the foot pedal there is a date of Feb 16, 1972.

The good thing is that the motor and electronics work fine.

The bearing seems good.

The foot pedal is going to take some work, though.

It has the original style of potentiometer with a rack and pinion gear.

The problem is that the rack has been jury-rigged and now slips off of the pinion.

Does anyone know where I could find information on this wheel?

Amaco just has info on more modern wheels and i haven't been able to find any other sources in my searches.

Thanks for your help,

Chris

you dont need the entire cast AL foot,  just the potentiometer piece and they sell a replacement arm that moves the lever up and down.   The guts are about half the cost of an entire pedal.

If you have the older foot pedals (70-73) a new potentiometer from Brent will not fit.

They redid the whole design with the new style foot pedal.

I appreciate the fact that the most expediant way would be to just replace the foot pedal.

If I was a business, that would be the solution. It still can be an option.

For me, this is a hobby wheel and $185 for a new pedal is more than I paid for the wheel in the first place.

I'm fairly handy in the shop and probably can reproduce the brackets if I knew what they looked like. Or reinvent them if I need to.

The potentiometer is still working. It even has the original epoxy covering the contacts to make it water-resistant. :)

Pictures of the inards of the original pedal would be the best.

Otherwise i will try to make a small bracket to hold the rack to the pedal. Then a guide to prevent the rack from shifting sideways on the potentiometer pinion.

Last, a screw to limit the travel of the pedal in the off position and prevent the rack from disengaging with the pinion.

In disassembling the speed controller I see that I need to replace the fuse holder, since it is broken. I am also going to replace the electrical box with an outdoor style, 2X, waterproof one.

Thanks,

Chris

I have owened two of those vintage wheels

Replacing that old metal box with a larger plastic box is a good idea as well as the new fuze holder.

I bought a used motor pedal and control on E-bay a few months ago as a spare for my wheels-you could look there every few months
