Pots by Char
I have an 04 clay body containing, Grolleg, 6 tile, C& C Ball clay Gerstley Borate, Silica, Talc and bentonite. It throws like a dream and handles very well, however, it has a tendency to bloat in the bisque and no matter what glaze is used it will turn out matt. Even the shiniest glossiest glazes on other bodies turn out a dull matt on this one. Any ideas where to tweak this recipe to correct this glaze fault? The percentages are as follows: Grolleg, 25, 6 tile 25, c&c ball clay 10 gerstley borate 30, Talc 5, Silica 5, Bentonite 2. Any advice is appreciated. Wyndham
I'm wondering if you were to reformulate this with a frit instead of GB or at least some percentage of frit if this might help or reducing the GB. Just a guess Wyndham
Pots by Char
I am thinking the GB might be a bit overpowering..especially since many of the glazes I use have a large portion of it in them as well...May just be too much of a good thing...Will try it with a frit and see what happens. Thanks for the advice.
TJR
I agree with Wyndam, that the Ger Bor may be the culprit. Looks a bit high. What about cutting it in half in one test, and then remove it altogether in another. You could replace with fritt, but this would make your clay body expensive. The ger Bor is not adding any plasticity, just fluxing the clay. You might not need it at all. TJR.
Min
There's a Val Cushing 04 body that is quite similar, fluxed with frit (and the talc). White, vitreous, dense, plastic. Grolleg 25 Tile 6 20 C&C 15 Talc 5 3124 30 Silica 5 Macaloid 2 The GB in your recipe is going to cause solubility problems. If you try this recipe I would swap out the macaloid for bentonite since macaloid is so expensive.
