Kris
I made a 22" circle tile that is about 1/2" thick. I cut the tile into 4 pieces around the design to try to eliminate breakage while firing. can someone help me understand how to make and use a waster? Mark C.
Roll out a slab off clay from same clay body or one that shrinks about the same-make it large enough so your tile fits on it. once both pieces are dry put the waster slab on kiln shelve and tile on top of slab. It will shrink and drag on shelve whereas your tile shrinks the same as slab and may not crack. It will help to put some high temp silica sand under slab and shelve as well so it can slide as it shrinks. The waster is just that its used once and discarded. Mark
Babs
I float heavy or large tiles on a layer of fine grog, and I reuse this. Better or not??

Benzine
I had a student make a 20", circular relief sculpture. I fired it on top of some coils, instead of a waster slab. It worked well, and as a bonus added a little more air flow underneath throughout the firing.
