michmich.lr
Hello, I'd like to experiment with making my own ceramic pencils. I found two recipes that caught my eye in an article by Robin Hopper on Ceramic Arts Daily: Ceramic Pencil Slip Recipe White firing ball clay50% Potash feldspar25 Silica25 100% Add: Macaloid (or 5% bentonite)3% Colorant (maximum)15% and a recipe for ceramic ink: Black Ceramic Ink Recipe Calcium borate 30% Potash feldspar 30 Ball clay 25 Silica 15 100% Add: Bentonite 5% Mason Stain 6600 or other black stain 10% Now, I would like to try different ways of reaching a black pencil: with a black stain, as well as wish metal oxides, alone or combined with the stain. I'd like to reach a really "black" black , which will stay clear and defined under glaze. Could someone please suggest which oxides ( alone or combined ) I should try and at which percents? what are the highest percents of metal oxides I can use if the pencils will be used on food wares? Thank you and thanks for reading my somewhat lengthy post! Michelle
