Personal Pottery Video

Thank you guys :D

I am very lucky to have two generous parents who replaced my old wheel that seemed to eat through these rubber rings that it used to spin.

You are right Chris, I have probably broken a few rules there. I should have credited the voice and need to remove the hbo ident sound before they hunt me down. I spent a long time looking for free music to use but couldn't find anything I wanted to use. Alan watt's talk seemed to fit the idea I had in mind. I have never been good with sounds and the ones I use are in appreciation of their work but it no doubt won't be perceived that way by the owners. Need to work on my plagiarism for the next one.

I have tried to tap centre but I end up hitting my pot around the wheel instead of getting in centred. It is slow but also the only way I can manage to do it successfully. You would have been in a lot of pain watching it in real time

Another method, similar to tap centering, that I use is to use clay wads to attach the ware to a thick bat.  I center the ware the best I can on said bat, which doesn't really matter that much, because the bats I use aren't perfect circles.  Then, like tap centering, I get the wheel going slowly, but instead of tapping the ware, I tap the bat.  The bat isn't nearly as likely to move too far, and there is no chance of hurting the ware.  Once I have it centered, I use more clay wads to hold the bat in place.

It seems like a small thing but I guarantee that every time those music bars are used, a composer hears CHA-CHING $$$ .... plus they are not exactly obscure.

I had a friend who did voice overs and commercials back in the dark ages ... and even then he had a company whose job it was to track down every time his voice was used. CHA-CHING $$$$

If your video went viral, you'd be hearing from some folks. :D:P:unsure:

thank you for making a video that shows what is being done instead of the back of someone's hand or a shot of a face just as a critical part is being done.  please show this to the makers of the videos we are bombarded with by the bucketful.  they may be "professionally" made but yours is what should be available for students.

thank you!

Never really liked using lugs of clay to stick the pot to the wheel. Think I need to make a few disposable pots to practise on, with practise anything can happen :D

Let's hope it doesn't go viral

Thank you for the kind words oldlady :D I know exactly what you mean about some videos not really showing what you need to see. It is quite hard to get the camera in the right place without your head or hands getting in the way. I want to buy a goPro or similar to get some point of view shots. I think they could be really nice and show a great angle. I tried attaching my digital SLR in front of my face but then I couldn't see what I was doing!

Lost the copyright issues but in the process I managed to save over the video with a new video :rolleyes: stupid mistake. I don't know my tea bowls from seaside mugs...

Took me ages to find a song I was happy with. It is funny how many of the songs I had already listened to in other peoples videos. Some older footage but I wanted to use it for something, and practise is good.

Excellent video ... Very nice.

Two business related concerns ...

Don't think you can use that little musical sound bite at the start without paying royalties.

Where is the credit for the voice over? You might have to pay to use that too.

Excellent concerns, Chris.  This kind of thing bothers me a lot too.  People use all sorts of things on the web withuit consideration of copyrights.

best,

In the industry the people who are paying for it expect a lot for nothing and don't understand how much work it actually takes. You have very tough hours to meet deadlines and I couldn't see myself in that world being able to compete with all the talented people.

Thing is for those in animation and digital art, a lot of it is being outsourced overseas just like so many other jobs. We still have people doing the creative end, but much of it is being sent to Indonesia and elsewhere. There are still a lot of people doing games and such in the US with 3D programs, and people doing animation, but that is mostly local commercial work.

I think copy right laws are a little outdated for the internet but you are right, I have removed the hbo sound and credited the voice over and music.

Still not sure if I am breaking any laws. Will need to read up on copyright so I don't get myself into trouble. I did read something on free use but I still don't understand what that counts as.

Being brought up most of my life with digital technology and the internet it is hard to not copy and repurpose. I find the internet a place where you can send out an idea and have it go through many different ittereations to come back completley changed. Meme are a good example of this. It is not great for people who want to make money. Mainly the music and film industry as now information can be easily copied and edited. Not that this didn't used to happen but now it is 1000 times easier. Everything being 1's and 0's instead of a physical object lends itself to copying.

You are right there pres. I remeber getting lectures from big companies who have started opening up studios in these places. It did seem to be more of the jobs that were monotinous and very tedious. There was a recent push to get tax relief in the uk for animation because of this fact. Still movies like harry potter have done a lot for the uk industry. It is amazing how many different companies can work on one film.
