Portraits China Painting

Maybe check out Paul Lewings's relatively new book "China Paint and Overglaze" (and/or the CAD dvd on that subject) and look in the appendix/resources part.  Also I understand that there is a china painters listserve type list (like CLAYART).

best,

I have not read Paul's book yet, What do you think of it?

I have been looking for something portrait china painting specific. Maybey not in a book form, but  If any one has seen a good color portrait study or vintage magazine articles that would be helpfull, feel free to holler. If anyone has any portrait sudy information that they may be willing to part with feel free to chime in. Names of current great portrait artists may be helpfull, possibly a seminar if it is in a reasonable distance from NE Ohio.

I'm not sure what would be a good forum for china painters. China painters seem to be separatists.

I think Paul's book is excellent....... he bridged the gap between the china painters and the potters nicely. It is not specific to portraits... but covers a lot of bases.

(Full disclosure- I'm included in it.)

best,

Marci Blattenberger is a very talented china painter and paints beautiful portraits.  In the past I have emailed her with questions and she has always responded generously and provided useful information.  Googling her name will bring up contact information including her website.  Marci spoke, with Paul Lewing at the NCECA conference in Seattle.

I decided to take a few China Painting classes to use the technique as a new tool since I do love to decorate the surfaces of my pots.  At first it was a repair technique;  to add those whiskers to a cat that I had forgotten to add, to sign a pot that I had neglected to do (indications of a poor memory huh?), and as my technique improved, to add a little life to a pot that was boring.  Now I am actually beginning to start off with the intention of creating a form I can finish with China Painting.  It is a very useful additional tool.  My teacher is a wonderful older lady, Lola, who paints the most exquisite things with what seems to be just a little twist of the wrist.  Her work is quite China Painting traditional but her sense of color and design is flawless and, although some of the subjects I paint on my work at first surprised (and amused) her, her advice is always spot on.  My best success so far is a slab built plate decorated as "farm quilt" with animals and vegetables.  Lola loved it and so that is what she got for her birthday last week.  My advice - try it you might really like it.

Hi Mug,

My specialty is portraits . ..and often portraits with an oddball treatment for the background.. like resinate lusters  or color shifting micas ..W

We have a bunch of lessons on our PPIO forum . PPIO ( Porcelain Painters International Online ) is like Clayart for china painters. We have a listserv that uis free to sign up for ( link for that on our main page www.PPIO.com ) . It downloads through your email like the Clayart list does... and I also set up the forum at www.PPIOforum.com  so we can post lessons and photos etc .

If you go to the forum  to Classroom # 1, you ll see my classroom there and there are a few lessons on portraits... but there are more on my student Becky Syroka's forum  thread. Hers is also in classrom # 1 right under mine.

Also the presentation that Paul Lewing and I did for the NCECA is Seattle is on the forum as well... our complete slide presentation along with text ..

You dont have to sign up for log in to the forum if you just want to look .. ( You do have to sign up if you want to post ) ..

Jane Marcks, who is fabulous has several books and a video on portraits also . Her contact email is : marcksartstudio at yahoo.com.

Joan, thank you for your kind words. I had a lot of people who were there for me with answers when I needed them .. and I am glad to help out others .

Also, yes, Lewing's book is excellent. It isnt a " learn how to " book ... but it has the most extensive history of overglaze  I ve ever seen from  antiques to contemporary ... traditional china painters as well as potter who use overglaze. .. and is well worth the money.

I dont know why  overglaze isnt more popular either. I guess the " grannies painting teapots" stigma is always there ... but like Paul says:" Its only paint. It doesnt get to decide!"

Feel free to contact me  at marci at PPIO.com

Thank you for posting the book tittles.

Pantarhei seems to be a hard book to find in the US. I would like to hear more about what the book contains and an ISBN number if you have it handy.

It is nice to see this post resurrected periodically as I still have a lot to learn.

Thanks again
