Viking Potter
I am building a second wheel and have reached that part of the plan where I need to decide the size and shape of the table or work area under the wheel head. I see some video where there is very little if anything under the wheel head, as well as video where there seems to be almost a 50 gallon barrel underneath. If you were to create a wheel from scratch, what would you like and what would you avoid.
Marcia Selsor
I have some rolling tables and one is by my wheel. I can switch them. I also throw next to my plaster wedging table , and throw wet slop from the bucket rim onto the plaster and anything I trim off the top or bottom when I am throwing. Fast recycling that way. I have an extended board on the wheel /splash pan for water and tools and lumps of clay. Bats are hanging from longs hooks on pegboard above the wedging table or on a lower shelf on the rolling table. Marcia
Bluewater
The wheel I rebuilt (rotten top Pacifica) now has a 2 foot by three foot maple top rectangular, 1.5 inches thick. I purchased the top added more sealer and put the old parts under it, it has no splash pan but I don't use one. I also stand so there is enough space for a shelf under there, have not gotten to that. If I was to do it over, I would make my table a little bigger. I would also buy the highest quality bearings, as I bought the cheapest ones and there are getting noisy after about 10,000 lab of clay, the original ones lasted about 40,000 before getting noisy, maybe see if there is a difference in the seals on the bearings. Also I would put it on wheels that can be put down, like on heavy shop tools, as my wheel is now very heavy for moving(not that I move it much). Hope that helps, your needs may be different so good luck with your project. Jeremy
