How Have You Rejuvenated Your Creative Juices This Year? | March 28, 2014

Potters Council Question of the Week:

How have you rejuvenated your creative juices this year?

What have you done to stimulate your mental state on the creative side? Have you observed things from nature? Read a good book? Taken a relaxing trip somewhere? Seen a show?

What helps you gear up for new work in your studio?

My forthcoming visit to La Meridiana and a lecture about Obvara by Marcia Selsor :) and, later in the year, the raku workshop with Steven Branfman!

I'am working happily on bowls and cups for the own Obvara testing adventure (fired in the pit, not in the kiln)....

Good question Marci!

I really get a lot out of talking to other artists.

Last night I hung out with an old friend from high school and we talked for a few hours about what we were each doing and where we wanted to go.  I don't think it was 15 minutes into the conversation when the ideas started flowing.  He makes vinyl toys.  I suggested that he could easily transfer his toys to slip casting or even sand/lost wax casting without too much difficulty or expense.  He showed me a lot of mind blowing prototyping stuff he uses or has access to.  He loved the idea of porcelain figurines.  This morning I got a message from him, he had this for me: http://www.kolintribu.com/ .  And we were off again. :)

This afternoon I picked up some cast iron scrap from a local foundry for a project I'm working on.  Talking to the foundry guys for just a few minutes gave me ideas.

Tonight I was supposed to go to a drawing jam where we pass around drawings and collectively work on them.  Scheduling didn't work out, but  whenever I go, I'm always impressed at how each person approaches the drawings differently.

0.001% of all this will likely get through my thick skull and make an actually imprint, but as long as I'm actively engaging with other artists or nature, or whatever, I find I get inspired.

Well, as Bcisketpottery says, it has been a L O N G winter.

In the midst of cabin fever, I gathered up all the old leftover clay in my studio, mushed it together and started making flowers and leaves and bases for my garden ... If Spring was not going to come to me, I would go to it.

So now the flowers and leaves are colored, fired and assembled ... the leaves are about half way finished and I am just waiting for some warm weather to install my garden art. You can see them in the blog part of my website.

.... My own work ... oops ......

Lately, every time a pot doesn't work the way I want it, I will find a way to embellish it to distract from something I don't like about it.  I broke the rim off a porcelain vase when I was trimming it the other day, so I added some flowers on the ridge to take away from the rim that I had to hand trim and moisten with my fingers to round off.  People seem to like it, and I am enjoying the miniature sculpting.  "only happy accidents" as bob ross would say. ;)

I went to India, and soaked up the colors, shapes and food. While I was there, I didn't really think it was inspiring me for new shapes or colors in my pottery - But when I got home and started using the wood block stamps I picked up - it took my work in a whole new direction. I was really surprised that I didn't see it coming!
