How Would You Describe This Figure?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and also to ceramics in general. I picked this up at a flea market last month and i need some help identifying it. Bought it because i think its really charming and i love the detail, but don't know anything about it.. here are some pics.

P.s. if i'm posting in the wrong place, could someone tell me where is a better section to post.

Thanks,

Tom

Looks like something made by a promising student in a hand-building/clay sculpture class.

Typical doilie impressions on slabs, whimsical, stifly rendered hands way small for head, hesitant brushstrokes in glaze/decoration, crudely done oversized hole cut into bottom, perhaps someone dipped some lace into slip for the collar and dress hem?

I didn't want to say this initially, but I find the figurine very disturbing.  I would not want it in my bedroom as I wouldn't be able to sleep.

It reminds me of one of Kristen Wiig's characters on Saturday Night Live.

I too refrained from comment earlier, but "Ugly" really is the only word I can think of.  I hope no-one here (or sensitive) made it, but I just can't think of any other word.

I did't realize people would find it so disturbing! I really can't understand that- to me it is just a boy looking thoughtful with a slight smile.. what is it that unsettles? I suppose the large head is a bit strange.. Anyway, this is the first piece i've bought so i'm looking at it with no experience. I'd be interested to know what it is that makes it disturbing/ugly to you?

Thanks for your help, Especially Lecira for the description. I'm going to try and sell it on eBay, i think categorizing/describing will be a challenge!

Here are a few more pics i took for the eBay listing. I'll admit that maybe the last one makes it look a bit creepy! (the vacant stare of a possessed child?!)

I missed it the first time around, but am intrigued by it.  With all the ceramic sculpture "creatures" being made today, this doesn't come anywhere close to being disturbing.  If Picasso had been working with clay during his blue or pink period, he would have done something similar.  I don't think it was done by a beginner because there are too many refinements to the clothing and the finishing touches on the stockings.  As to the small hands, I've been sculpting for over 40 years, and most people make hands & feet too small in proportion to the rest of the figure.  The main reason for this is because we observe the hands and feet moving or gesturing, so when they are still, the artist has to make the feet or hands larger than what their sense of measure would have them be.  Even if you measured the size of a hand in relationship to the size of face/head, you would have to increase the hand's size to satisfy the viewer's eye.

Check out some of Rodin's or Michaelangelo's sculptures.

Oh, yes, I find the Saturday Night Live character very disturbing.

I second Babs question.  What happened to the figurine?

Good point Shirley.  Michaelangelo's "David" has facial features, that have unrealistic proportions.  But then again, it is a near twenty foot tall piece of stone, that's meant to be viewed from ground level.  Which is kind of a shame, as Michaelangelo took the time, to put a look of fear on the face, but it's not noticeable by most.
