Mark C.
So back in the 70's my brother on one of his many Japanese trips (art professor) saw a show and and brought me the show poster and some Japanese throwing tools I had it framed after years of sunlight worked it over and the corners where toast. It's in the bedroom now and I awake to it. Who is this mystery artist? I have a feeling this will be to easy. Mark
Guest JBaymore
Wish the images were larger but,.... 濱田 庄å¸, = Hamada Shoji. (1894-1978) (Ningen Kokuho) Living National Treasure in Folk Pottery. In the mid to late 70's he was at about the peak of his career. The image is too small to see the dates clearly.... but it looks like 1977....... and the workl looks it...... and that large bowl on the poster (probably about 52-54 cm in diameter) would have sold back then for about $60,000.00 USD. best, .................john
Biglou13
Similar style http://www.ceram.titech.ac.jp/en/index.html John has your answer. My wild guess was shimaoka, Hamada influence if not one of them. I was close. It has the fluidity of Shimaoka, but In my limited study I haven't see use of drippy glaze, nor the boldness in brush stoke. Also missing the texture of shimaoka. Naturally it was his master..... (Not that I have experience with...short of Internet , holding one piece, and lacma museum collection, and a few books, also I'm no where near the level of sensei John)
Mark C.
You got it-I'll try another shot on a non sunny day a bit closer as there are windows on all sides of the poster I think it was a life retrospective show of the then living treasure-the year was 1977.I have had it up since then and it shows.
