Gallery Commentary?

Recommended Posts

Why must a moderator approve comments made to ones gallery images?

As an artist I welcome all commentary good or bad. It's the indifferent opinion that bugs me.

Any commentary allows me to rethink my approach, or defend my position. Both important aspects when creating an defining ones/my style. Any comment may/will improve my making , decorating firing my ceramic art.

If you don't welcome commentary then maybe that function should be an option to turn off.

Let's face it we are a visual, tactile , functional, creative, art field! If your making work not to be seen don't post it.

The approval of comments reeks of censorship.

If I'm way off base here please explain, make your point.

Some people are really gifted and it shows in their gallery. Others are new and starting out. There have been some of the latter group have been blasted with harsh critiques of their work.

I have started writing music. This week I wrote my first song. If I posted that song on a "music forum" visited by classically trained musician. And if my song got shot down and harshly critiqued, you could bet I would NEVER post again on that site. I realize my song has a lot of rough edges, kind of like some of pots and clay projects in some galleries.

Bottom line: good carma always come back to you.

biglou, I don't think a moderator is required for folks to leave comments in your gallery. But I could be wrong, maybe the recent software update changed that? Can you describe what you experienced that indicated a moderator was required to approve comments?

I was going to try to leave a comment in your gallery myself, but since I am a moderator that wouldn't prove anything. Can somebody else try leaving a comment in biglou's gallery?

10:37 am on Nov. 7 ... I just added a comment to biglou's gallery and it said it required moderator approval. I looked through my account settings and could only see a setting for me approving messages in my gallery before they showed up ... didn't read anything about a moderator looking at them. It will be interesting to see when my comment shows up ... how long it takes for someone/something to read it and approve.

I have to say that I don't see the point of moderator interference when I myself can control this activity through my own settings. Weird.

Yea, I don't think this is necessary either. Thanks for trying it Chris, and thanks for notifying the admins John.

biglou, can you check to see if you have the "allow me to approve comments on my profile" button checked? Maybe the moderator in this case is you?

Our IT Director is out for a few days, but I'll look into this. I agree that we don't need admin approval of gallery comments, as long as it's limited to registered users (like the regular forums setting). I'll try to track it down myself as well, but it may be a while before we get this switched.

Thanks for the heads up!

Okay, folks, it does look like John was right that there was an update to the admin functionality in galleries where automatic moderation for was added (with no notification to us). I have just overridden that (I think). Try it again and let me know if it does not work.

I just posted a comment in you gallery Chris.  It SEEMED to go OK.  But then I am a Mod.... so that might negate this as a test (but not the comment content).

OK... now we know........ so it was the fact that I am a Mod and apparently have software permissions set to post directly.

I went to Chris' gallery, and couldn't even find a way to make a comment of any sort.  Okay, so I'm not up to date on the new IT stuff, 'cause I kind of quit visiting during the "adult phase" of CAD.  Soooo, how does one make a comment in/on the gallery page (or on the profile page)?  Couldn't find the right button (s).

I'll take blame for that. I usually give a harsh critique. No apologies.

Most of those who have been on the forum for awhile tend to have skin as tough as leather. We can handle it. But I'm still shy about uploading my work. When I start uploading pics I expect real full strength critiques.

It is still not fixed.

I just added a comment to Phill's work and got the

"Your comment requires moderator approval before it will be shown".

Hey my partner in crime! My community rank is still negative, a badge of honor I think. Thanks for the comment, although I wish I could see it haha.
