Please use laymens terms since I am just starting out. I bought an old kiln and it needs e few repairs and I'm on a tight budget so I am learning DIY kiln repair. Denice Posted September 30, 2013 Report Share Posted September 30, 2013 Repairing the lids are difficult because of expansion and contraction during firing. I bought a used lid from our local ceramic supplier last year for around 50 dollars much less than a new one. They rewire and rebuild kilns at the store, perhaps you can find someone who rebuilds. Mark C. Posted October 1, 2013 Report Share Posted October 1, 2013 The old name was Lees Patch now its called Axner Patch-You can order it online from Axner.com. I think they bought out Lees's?? Axner is Laguna Clay Company.They bought out Axner. Its made for hot surfaces and is not supposed to fall off-Its made for this Job I'm told. neilestrick Posted October 1, 2013 Report Share Posted October 1, 2013 Patching or reattaching old bricks is sketchy at best, regardless of the claims made by Axner. A thin coat of cement to keep broken bricks from dropping little bits onto your pots will work, but mortaring a chunk into place is likely to fail. If chunks are less than half way through the lid, I would just leave them out. If the lid is cracked all the way through, you'll need to replace the whole slab. Is the damage on the inner or outer lid surface?
