I use laguna macabee cone5 clay and fire it to 04 bisque and then glaze and fire to cone 5 and everything is fine. My wife wants to take a couple pieces of my bisque fired cone 5 clay and put a low fire glaze cone 06 on it and fire it to cone 06. I told her I don't think this will work as the clay that is cone 5 is designed for cone5 glazes. I don't think they will adhere, am I correct? OffCenter Posted August 2, 2013 Report Share Posted August 2, 2013 It will adhere and it will probably work but the clay will not be mature so it will not be as strong would be fired to cone 5/6 and it will leak even if covered in glaze. So, if she doesn't mind weak clay that leaks all should be fine. If she doesn't want weak clay that leaks an option (beyond the obvious which is to buy a low-fire clay or mid-fire glazes) is to "bisque" it to cone 5/6 then glaze it and fire to cone 06. It will be a lot harder to get the glaze to adhere to mature clay (It probably really matures at cone 6-7 like most Laguna clays rated for cone 5) but can be done by heating (carefully) the fired piece. golemstudio Posted August 2, 2013 Report Share Posted August 2, 2013 Yes, applying the glaze on the fully matured clay body after the cone 5 firing will be a bit tricky, but still doable. For easier application you can heat the fired pieces before the glazing. Placing the items that will be glazed on the top of running kiln works just fine, other option is to heat them in kitchen oven. Using a bit thicker glaze than normally will be helpful too. Do you mean our website, golemstudio.com ? If yes, most of the pendants and cabs are between 36 and 45 mm in the longest dimension, the beads are much smaller. I'll be happy to answer any questions. Hadn't read this first, but I still want to know what might happen to other pieces in the kiln if the low-fire glaze is put in a cone 6 firing. Ginny C. oldlady Posted August 3, 2013 Report Share Posted August 3, 2013 whatever you are imagining is just imagination. the glaze will run, it will not vaporize anything else or cause problems except that in melting while everything else is firing, it might drip over the edge of its shelf and fall on something else.
